Queers who make Chicago great: us!

Belive it or not, we made into Time Out Chicago's Personal Best for 2006 for the Feast of Fools Podcast. The article is a "partial list of artists and activists who reshaped the GLBT world in 2006 right here on the Third Coast."

On the list is our good gal pal Jessica Halem and her partner Red Tremmel for their work in fighting breast cancer and promoting burlesque throughout the known universe. Respectively. Although we're sure they will combine forces not just between the sheets, but on the streets.

Stay on the lookout next week as Jessica and Red appear on the show to promote promote Gurlesque Burlesque with Margaret Cho on Saturday January 13th.

Thanks to Jason A. Heidemann for writing the article.

FEAST OF FOOLS JOINS THE RED REVOLUTION

New York, NY —October 19, 2006— Feast of Fools, America’s leading GLBT podcast, today announced the Feast of Fools RED T-Shirt Special Edition to help in the fight against AIDS in Africa. Feast of Fools will contribute 5% from the sale of each Feast of Fools RED T-Shirt to the Global Fund to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. The Feast of Fools RED T-Shirt is 100% fine combed cotton and comes in a beautiful cranberry red, sure to look great on everyone! To make the deal even sweeter, hosts Fausto Fernos and Marc Felion will also include a limited edition DVD of mp3 files of the award-winning Feast of Fools podcast with every purchase.

(PRODUCT) RED™ was created by U2 lead singer, Bono and Bobby Shriver to engage business in the fight against AIDS in Africa by encouraging the world’s most influential businesses to make uniquely branded products. Today, the Feast of Fools joins in solidarity. A portion of the profits from these products goes directly to the Global Fund to fund programs for women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

“As gay men, we have seen first hand how AIDS can devastate a community,” said Fausto Fernós, founder and host of Feast of Fools, recently honored with the People’s Choice Award™ for Best GLBT podcast. “We can’t sit back as it continues to wipe out defenseless men, women and children. We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to help.”

“Now our loyal listeners can enjoy their favorite podcast and do something to help the world at the same time,” said Marc Felion, co host. “With the holidays right around the corner, the Feast of Fools RED T-Shirt, paired with a DVD with hundreds of classic shows, makes the perfect gift. You can load the shows directly to the new RED iPod, being offered by Apple as part of RED initiative.

“A very important aspect of the RED campaign is that all the merchandise costs the same as the non-red merchandise,” continued Felion. “Because of this, it sparks a new trend in socially conscious marketing. Everyone participates by getting and wearing the t-shirt."

“We’re excited to be able to contribute to the life-saving campaign that is The Global Fund to Fight AIDS,” added Fernos. “We want to help change the way people think about AIDS in Africa.”

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was established in 2002, with the support of the world’s leaders and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, to dramatically increase resources to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need by supporting locally-driven strategies. To date, the Global Fund has committed $5.2 billion (US) to more than 363 programs in 131 countries.

A Fool's Kiss

Did you see? We're in the front page of OutInAmerica.com!

The article reads- "they shocked the predominantly straight audience by accepting their award for “Best GLBT Podcast” with a big gay kiss."

We really didn't mean to shock and awe anyone. When Marc and I RAN up to the stage to accept the People's Choice Podcast Award

This award belongs to not just us, but to Amanda, Miss Ronnie, Sal-E, César Torres, Gregg Shapiro and all the guests we've had and all the fans who listen and download the show every single day.

We make this show as a love letter to the world, to the underdogs out there, to the common everyday person who shows off a little sass and class.

“We hope that our success is proof that you no longer have to hide who you are in order to live your dreams.” -Fausto Fernós

Check out the good people at Podcasting News, that put the FOF on the front cover!

"Among the winners of the People’s Choice Podcast Awards were Fausto Fernos and Marc Felion, above, of the Feast of Fools podcast. If there were an award for best-dressed podcasters, they would have won, hands down. They accepted their award for Best GLBT podcast sporting retro smoking jackets (Fausto’s in a brilliant blue) with matching ruffle shirts."

Feast of Fools Makes it West Coast Debut

Hello good people of the world, we're putting the final touches for our live show at Miky's in West Hollywood tonight at 8PM, and all I can say is it's going to be a battle of the divas, Miss Ronnie vs. Amanda Steinstein. Now, we are not setting them up for any drama, but, as you know, with these two ladies, anything can happen! Jell-O wrestling anybody?

Marc and I are busy rehearsing our musical number which would make our mama's proud. You are going to love it so get there early so you don't miss it. Sal-E Has been busy applying rhinestones and glittler to his face since he left Chicago. They almost didn't let him board the plane he was so crazy looking. Well, after the full body cavity search, they let him fly. What till you see him and watch his routine. You're going to love it!

There are also rumors that puppeteers Heather Henson and Marsian and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are going to drop by for a visit. Hope you can make it!

Be sure to check out the fab article/interviewwritten by Duane Wells at 365Gay.com.

Thank you so much Duane for the lovely article!

Taking podcasting to new heights.

"I think Marc is one of the sexiest, funniest and smartest men I've ever known, and he's always surprising me with the brilliantly funny and insightful things he says on the show. If we ever get married, it's going to be a huge spectacle, and we're going to market the hell out of it. Pay per view folks! [Laughs.] It will make Cirque du Soleil look like amateur night at [Chicago drag bar] the Baton. [Laughs.]"

For Immediate Release: Feast of Fools podcast wins People’s Choice Award.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Fausto Fernos: (773) 818-7799
feastoffools[at]gmail.net • www.feastoffools.net • www.podcastawards.com

CHICAGO, IL (August 15) – Feast of Fools podcast makes history as the first gay themed podcast to win the People's Choice Podcast Award.

This year marks the first time any gay themed podcast has won the award in its own GLBT category. Over 7.9 million votes were submitted making this year the most contested and anticipated for the awards.

Over the 15 day period from the 1st to the 15th of July, 3,285 shows were nominated from a submission pool of 875,000 nominations. A team of volunteers reviewed, listened and graded over 500 podcast sites and shows in order to determine the final voting slate. Recognized were the top five shows in 22 categories for a total of 110 shows representing a very diverse range of subjects. New categories for this year included Best Podcast Directory, Best Mobile Podcast and Best GLBT Podcast.

Fausto Fernós and his partner Marc Felion spearheaded the podcasting revolution in February 2005 with their comedy talk show, the Feast of Fools. As the first gay couple in history to produce a podcast, along with their ensemble of on-air personalities, the show's irreverent look at odd news and cultural trends defined the podcast talk show genre and continues to rank on top of the charts as one of the most popular programs available online.

The Feast of Fools podcast holds the proud distinction of winning the 2006 People's Choice Podcast Award and having the distinction of being the only GLBT podcast recognized by Apple Computer as a "pioneering show that helped bring podcasts from an underground movement to a mainstream phenomenon."

Some of the show's past celebrity guests have included: filmmaker John Waters, actress Teri Garr, comedian Kathy Griffin, drag legend Lady Bunny, and Star Trek legend George Takei.

Every show is downloaded on the range of 6000-8000 times a month, with an average weekly distribution of 30,000 downloads. As a result, The Feast of Fools podcast is the most popular comedy podcast coming out of Chicago. No other gay-themed podcast has more listeners.

A real-life gay couple, Fernós and Felion bring light to many serious issues not brought up in mainstream media, but within the gay community itself. Bringing a sense of humor to their daily discussion on odd news and social trends they connect on a deep and personal level with their listeners five days a week.

GAY PODCASTING CELEBRITIES MEET WITH THEIR FANS IN NEW YORK CITY

CHICAGO, IL (March 27) – Known as the world's most downloaded gay podcast*, the Feast of Fools gives back to their legions of fans as hosts Fausto Fernós and Marc Felion bring an entourage of podcasting celebrties to take a bite out of the "Big Apple" for their second "Feast of Fools

Fernós says, “Our East coast fans demanded we pack our backs and come face to face with them in the Big Apple. We want to take every opportunity to get out and meet those individuals who have made Feast of Fools the success it is.” Picking New York was no coincidence since a recent Podtrac poll (an independent podcasting measurement system) rated New York having 3rd highest listening base for the show.

Guests will include several of New York’s own gay celebrities including best-selling "I am Not Myself These Days" author Josh Kilmer-Purcell, American Idol contestant Amnesia Sparkles and celebrity drag queen Miss Understood.

Also traveling from Chicago are podcasters Victoria Lamarr (the first person living with full-blown AIDS to have her own video podcast), Miss Ronnie Vanna (the tough-talking hilarious advice guru), and Amanda Steinstein (the irreverent well-known jewish podcaster.)

The Feast of Fools podcast is also Chicago's #1 comedy podcast* (gay or straight) and consistently ranks higher in the iTunes Top 100 than such notable personalities as Howard Stern and even the President of the United States. No other gay-themed podcast has more listeners. Every show is

Every weekday the Feast of Fools posts a brand new show, anchored by Fernós and his life-partner Marc Felion. Along with their colorful menagerie of friends the couple discusses news, current events and dispenses advice and cocktail recipies in a hilarious unparalled manner that only the Feast of Fools delivers.

The Feast of Fools manages to attract an impressive array of eccentric celebrities like: John Waters, Kathy Griffin, Teri Garr, Bruce Vilanch and Dee Snider; along with compelling in-depth interviews with musicians, writers and artists not on the mainstream radar screen.

Fernós and Felion bring light to many serious issues not only in mainstream media, but within the gay community. Through laughter and an ever witty sense of humor they discuss current news, trends, and issues within minority culture. The Feast of Fool’s ability to connect with each and every listener has made it the success that it currently is.

An Independent Podcast worth every minute- the Feast of Fools

Street Voice Magazine wrote this lovely review about our podcast, and we'd like to share it with you. Thanks Street Voice!

From Street Voice Magazine APRIL 5TH 06 - IN DEFENCE OF ANIMALS ISSUE

Now, my pick-this month - for an independent podcast worth every minute of the time it takes to find it, download it and enjoy is Feast of Fools hosted by Marc Felion and Fausto Fernos, a gay couple talking it up in Chicago. One of the first of its kind, the show airs five days a week and includes a cast of zany characters that perfectly accentuate the easy banter between the dynamic-duo themselves. So far, my favorite is the clever, in-your-face diva by the name of Miss Ronnie.

Not only do they chat it up about their lives and experiences; they discuss some of the topics going on in the world from politics to wedding dresses accessorized with birds. They also give listeners a chance to hear some independent musicians and give movie reviews of the quieter gay persuasion. They have an increasingly large fan base so much so in fact that recently, HBOs Big Love series sponsored the show, for about a month. These guys are witty, intelligent and definitely worth a listen.

So, go to the website Feast Of Fools, poke around and enjoy some quality entertainment. Buy a t-shirt (though the price is a bit steep) and get to know this funny cast from the Windy City. If you're so inclined, feel free to buy Miss Ronnie an iPod (shes a working student after all). New Yorkers have a chance of meeting the cast live and in person on April 13th, 2006. [At the Starlight Bar Lounge in the Village, 7-9pm]

Climbing the charts!

Thank you everybody that sent me an email, a card or a birthday gift. I really appreciate it. Your kindness has been overwhelming!
I had a great birthday. I hung out with Miss Ronnie all day, had some some sushi with Fausto and then the three of us went to Big Mamma's House 2. Yes it was bad!

After the movie we went and had a few drinks at one of the local watering holes. It was a fun time. When we got home we were alerted that we were in the top 100 podcasts, not just comedy but of all podcasts! What a great birthday present. And today we are at number 92. Wow.

Out of five million estimated podcasts that exisit in the world, we're the only gay people who rank in the top 100 according to iTunes as of today.

We want to thank you all for listening, for supporting us, wearing our t-shirts and we want to thank all of our guests. We wouldn't be here without you. We promise to keep on giving you the best shows we can.

Stop by Clark's on Clark on February 9th at 8pm, and get a special FREE Feast of Fools merachandise. What is it going to be? (It's not crappy.) Think of it as a happy meal without the fat and sodium.

-Marc

PRIDECASTING:
Feast of Fools podcast celebrates Pride in June

Celebrity interviews include John Waters, Holly Hughes, Tim Miller, Annie Sprinkle, Randy Jones, and Holly Woodlawn.

CHICAGO, June 1--The Feast of Fools promises big names and big laughs, deep thoughts and deep jabs in June, when the top-rated podcast celebrates Pride Month.

Podcaster Fausto Fernós talks with filmmaker John Waters about “Dirty Shame” and hilarious sexual fetishes like "Sploshing." Pride month shows also include affectionately cheeky chats with NEA-4 performance artists Tim Miller and Holly Hughes, a walk on the wild side with Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn, an extrasensory conversation with psychic astrologer Alan Oken, as well as interviews with filmmakers Robbert Coddington and David Weisman, Lair Scott - creator of Ziggy 2000 from Stardust (The David Bowie Tribute Band), Village People cowboy Randy Jones, and post-porn modernist Annie Sprinkle.

“This month we'll be talking to our big fancy celebrity friends to show how electrifying our podcast is!” says Fernós.

The Feast of Fools comedy/talk show, an offshoot of the flamboyant rock and roll variety show that’s become a staple on Chicago’s alternative scene, is taped and posted daily by Fernós and partner Marc Felion.

The podcast—unfiltered, uncensored and unbridled—is available free, for listening or download, at

Feast of Fools 7.0 coming soon.

This friday marks the Feast of Fools' 8 year anniversary, and the seventh version of the show. Take a look:

• Spring 1998: Bill Haddad coins the name "Feast of Fools" for the artist's variety show benefit for Randolph Street Gallery.

• Fall 1998: Fausto Fernós and Asimina Chremos organize "The Feast of Fools Cabaret" at Big Chicks in Uptown, Chicago.

• September 1999: Due to audience size, the Feast of Fools moves to a new location at the Bailiwick Theater on Belmont Ave.

• April 1, 2000: "The Feast of Fools Freaky Sheaky Cabaret" moves to the Hothouse Interntaional Center for Performance and Exhibition.

• Feb 21, 2002: Thanks to Victoria Lamar and Marc Felion, the Feast of Fools moves to an unprecedented location, a huge Vietnamese Banquet Hall in the heart of Uptown, just doors down from Big Chicks.

• May 26, 2004: "Feast of Fools Show" moves to it's new and current home for it's live show at Schubas Tavern in Lakeview (just doors down from Bailiwick Theater.)

• April 1, 2005: Thanks to intense pressure from Madge Weinstein, Marc Felion and Fausto Fernos launch the "Feast of Fools.net" as also a podcast talk show, which recently ranked #25 in its debut according to Podcastalley.com listener votes.

You've come a long, long way baby. Thanks David Cerda, Asimina Chremos, Jason Smith, Radical Faeires everywhere, drag queens everywhere, straight folks, anyone who'se ever performed in our shows, Bill Haddad, Jennifer Trowbridge, Peter Carpenter, Doug Stapleton, Ken Hunt, Pe.A.Ch., Sxip, Kerthy Fix, Silky Jumbo, Jojo, Patricia Fernos, Talia Fernos, Link Pinks, Mu-Mu A'Chu, Victoria Lamar, Madge, Marc, and Me! And of course YOU our audience, without you, I would be in some insane asylum, dead, or miserable somewhere far far away. This is a big deal, and I'm getting a little choked up, so thanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my iPod from crashing?
People from time to time write to us asking for any insight on figuring out why playing our show cane make their iPod quit. I've done a little research to try and find some solutions.

Because we don't make the iPod or any other mp3 player, only the mp3 files the best approach is to try to contact Apple Computer or the manufacture directly and see what solutions they may provide.

I went digging online at Apple's own website and found some solutions of my own:

First try the 5 R's of iPod:
RESET, RETRY, RESTART, REINSTALL, RESTORE

1- Try updating your firmware on your iPod • Click here.
2- Turn off equalization on the device. • Click here.
3- Turn off Sound Check on the device. • Click here.

Remember you are not alone! I highly recommend visiting Apple.com discussion forums.

Here is a great list of iPod Frequently Asked Questions.

Here is one forum question with some solutions.

If you just bought the iPod, remember you can always visit an Apple store or call them for free technical support.

"Customers within 90 days of ownership are eligible for complimentary phone support—one incident per iPod and unlimited incidents per Mac. Purchase an AppleCare Protection Plan while still covered by the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty to extend your coverage. 1-800-275-2273 for technical assistance. Canadian customers, please call 1-800-263-3394. Other customers can find worldwide support numbers here."

Hope this helps, please post your own solutions if you have any.
WHAT IS A PODCAST?
A podcast is like a radio show or tv show on the internet, only you can subscribe to it and have it download in the background, like email. If you have iTunes installed its really easy to subscribe, just click here. Downloading and using iTunes is free, and subscribing to our show is free.

If you don't like iTunes you can also subcribe using these other methods:
SUBSCRIBE VIA: RSS FEED |ODEO | YAHOO | PODZINGER | BLUBRRY

How do I subscribe?
We recommend using iTunes because it is easy and free. If you already have the most current version of iTunes, just click here to go straight to the page.

Another way is to go to the Itunes music store and click podcast on the left-hand side menu. Search for "–Gay Fun Show- The Feast of Fools" or "Feast of Fools" or just "Fausto." You can also find us under the comedy directory. Click on the Feast of Fools icon and then hit the subscribe
button.

I like the music you play in the show. How can I find out who it is and where can I buy it?
All the artists we play on the show can be found in the show notes of each particular show at feastoffools .net. Follow the links where it says "Featured Music" to the iTunes music store, Amazon or CD Baby! You can also visit our mainmusic page.We get a little kickback for everything you buy for 18 hours after visiting iTunes through one of our links. Its a great way to support our podcast!

How do I sync up my iPod to automatically download the show to my Ipod?
iTunes offers podcast syncing, so you don't need any additional software to put us on your iPod. A new set of iTunes preferences allows you to automatically sync all your podcasts or just the podcasts you choose. You can even choose which podcast episodes to update — all episodes, only selected episodes, only recent episodes or only unplayed episodes. iTunes makes syncing your podcasts as easy as managing them.

When can I listen to the show?
Anytime you want. We are always here waiting for you. We post a brand new show five days a week. Although it feels like we're in the room with you, the show's are all pre-recorded. They are not
live. You don't have to tune in at a certain time (unlike radio where if you blink you'll miss it!)

When are new shows posted?
Most shows are posted around midnight central U.S. time. Monday through Friday.

iTunes only lists the last thirty shows. How do I access the archives?
Go to www.feastoffools.net, on the right hand side, you will find the archive link listed by month. Click on the month you want and find the show to which you would like to listen. Left click to just listen to the podcast. Right click to save the download and put it manually on your Ipod.

When did the Feast of Fools start podcasting?
Our first podcast was posted on Tuesday, February 8th, 2005. It had Fausto Fernós, Marc Felion and our live show's band leader Link Pinks talking about Paul McCartney's superbowl halftime show, censorship and breastgate. We predicted that podcasting was going to be huge. Unfortuately we can't post the show because due to copyright issues. (Don't worry, it wasnt that good.)

Why did you choose to start podcasting?
The Feast of Fools was originally a live theatrical experience performed in many Chicago area venues. It was a variety show that featured music, dance, poetry, comedy and performance art with an
outrageous play that took place between acts. Fausto and Marc wanted to take the show a step further by creating a cable access show, but then podcasting burst onto the scene with the promise of
video podcasting in the near future. It was decided that we would embrace this new media rather than cable access because of the ability to reach a greater audience and the freedom from FCC regulations.

How do I become a guest on the Feast of Fools?
We are always looking for unusual, spicy and delicious interview subjects or story angles. It's best if you get us in touch with someone, instead of saying "I wish you could do an interview with Amy Sedaris" but don't give us her agent's phone number. Please email us at feastoffools [at] gmail.com. We are always open to new guests and ideas.

How do you get these fabulous guests?
Having been involved in the arts for many years now, the Feast of Fools gang built a network of friends and contacts. Without the support of our friends and colleagues, this show would not be what it is today. We also depend a lot on our own listeners, bloggers, and media folks giving us great tips/agents/publicits phone numbers and email addresses. Without you we're nothing!

How do you do five shows a week and still have jobs?
It's in our DNA. We live to do this show, and make it our #1 priority. Podcasting is hard work! If we're not at work, or working out, sleeping or eating, we're usually podcasting. This is our life's passion and we put back every cent of our own money into paying for bandwidth, equipment, and materials.

Support the Feast of Fools in 10 easy ways:
1- Tell your friends about us. Show them how to listen to the show.
2- Link to us on your blog or website.
3- Write us a great review on iTunes
4- Write a letter to your local newspaper telling them about our show.
5- Email the show to a friend (you can freely share the mp3 files, its LEGAL.)
6- Buy a tshirt. Your donations help us pay for our expenses.
7- Email us a hot scoop! An unusual news item, a contact to a celebrity, or an interesting show topic.
8- Comment on the site. We read those comments first and always respond to them.
9- If you're a musician, mail us your CD and we'll play it on the show, and even put an iTunes link up so that our listeners can buy your music! We discourage music piracy and encourage iTunes/Amazon sales.
10- Come to our Meet N' Greets and tell us face-to-face what you think of our show! Better yet, help organize a local Feast of Fools event in your area. We're cheap.

What's up with the blue hair?
Podcasters love the color blue! Maybe it's because blue is belived by Hindu's and ancient Asian cultures to be tied with the communication/self-expression center of the body or the seventh "chakra." Blue also represents to us the term "Blue Comedy" which is material that is too raunchy or explicit to be shown through traditional broadcast channels. And of course astronomer Carl Sagan said that the color blue best represents humanity because it's the color our planet looks like when seen from far far away. Sacre bleu! Blue is sacred to us. Here on the Feast of Fools we embrace the color blue in all it's vivid and fabulous ways.

The rich sky blue is the official "color" of the Feast of Fools podcast.

When we were doing the live shows (before the days of podcasting) I was called the "Blue Fairy" by many of my fans because of all blue colored wigs and outfits I wore. As time wore on, I made a conscious decision to integrate my on-stage look with my everyday look, as a way to relate to the audience as myself.
