FOF #508 - Lizz with Two Z's - 04.09.07

Yes, it's Lizz with two Z's You may not immediately recognize Lizz's name, but you probably enjoy the fruits of her labor.
Comedian and television producer Lizz Winstead created the news parody program "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central as a response to CNN's paradigm shifting coverage of the first War in Iraq in the early 90s. Since it's inception the show has become a major source for people's news despite the fact that it's a comedy show.
Lizz chats with us about about how The Daily Show was conceived, their original choice for host and wether she ever got an apology from Craig Kilborn about the nasty comment that got him suspended.
Ms. Winstead has a had a lot of odd jobs, from working at the Red Barn to the relaunch team for Broadway Production of Grey Gardens She has come up with fantastic taglines for the show including "What's wrong with snacking on a little cat food in your bathing suit?-Grey Gardens, The Musical" She highly recommends the show so get your tickets now. (Check out the episode #101 of the Broadway Bullet podcast for more on Grey Gardens at www.broadwaybullet.com)
It's funny that Lizz takes us to task (and by surprise) for asking in a previous post why her good friend pornographer Chi Chi LaRue is on OUT Magazine's "Power 50" Who would have thought that this funny lady has the famous porn director as a friend? It turns out they are friends from their days in Minnesota. Lizz lets us know that it might not be that ChiChi has made a gazzillion dollars in skin flicks that put him on the list but rather as top gay pornographer he knows where all the gay bodies are buried. Eek!
Lizz Winstead's emrbace of podcasting and internet culture is a refreshing and exciting to hear. She thinks podcasts are comedically funnier than radio and TV. The word itself is funny and the medium is fresh. Remember, this one of the masterminds who created the award-winning "Daily Show."
Lizz blogs from time to time on the Huffington Post and you can befriend her on myspace.
Join us at Lizz Winstead's upcoming gig at Zanies in Chicago.
Maybe the most important podcast ever made- Feast of Fools.

Happy Birthday Fausto! It`s fantastic that you managed to get the producer of the "Daily Show" on the phone. The show is hilarious.

Lizz is in my opinion one of the top three guests you've had on your show. Congratulations Fausto and Marc. So it goes in this order: Fake Lady Bunny, Sulu and now Lizz Winstead!
Said by: Jason at April 9, 2007 06:39 AM
I think she's great too. After Sulu, best guest.
Guys, even with the Benny Hill music, still couldn't watch that Passion of the Christ clip. oi !
Great show.....

Long Live Lizz! I feel a bit guilty liking her so much, because she reminds me of another funny catholic readhead comedian. I'm not talking about Lucille Ball, I'm talking about Kathy Griffin! I am now a 100% Lizz-a-holic.
I love Lizz's humanity, her passion for politics, her embrace of the internet and her gregariousness. We'll be seeing a WHOLE lot more from her. Can Lizz run for President?

HAPPY B-DAY FAUSTO! I love Lizz, the interview was laugh out loud funny... she is so down to earth and simply amazing!
Said by: Ben Franks at April 9, 2007 09:46 AM
Love the Minnesoootan accents!!!
Said by: Gary T at April 9, 2007 09:48 AM
This program was so much fun! It makes me think - how come some people can have a sense of humor and some don't... think of what the second group is missing! Lizz has it galore! I wish I could see her show live in Chicago! And to think it's on Fausto birthday! Laugh it up for me! What joy! Whoop it up, boys!
Said by: Patricia Fernós at April 9, 2007 10:36 AM
I love Lizz! I used to listen to her and Rachel Maddow on Air America in the mornings. I was so sad when she left that show. Thanks guys for another great interview.
Said by: Christopher Hamilton at April 9, 2007 11:32 AM
It was great to hear Lizz but I especially liked her catchphrase for Grey Gardens. A mansion, 2 crazy women, and 100 cats. There are 2 DVDs, Grey Gardens and Beales of Grey Gardens. Go get them both and have a Grey Garden Party. The Beales are so fascinating to watch.
Said by: Cliff Dix(from Atlanta) at April 9, 2007 11:42 AM
Liz reminds me of Kathy Griffin
Said by: carlo at April 9, 2007 11:42 AM
Love the show! That Cranberry-Red shirt would look sooooo hot on my BF. When will you get more?
Said by: Tim at April 9, 2007 11:47 AM
lizz winstead?!
oh man i cant wait to listen to this show!
Unfiltered was the best radio show evar!!!!
Said by: raequel at April 9, 2007 12:43 PM
What a great show. Lizz definitely is up in your top ten best guest list. Lizzbian, that cracks me up!
And can I just say that I'm so happy Grey Gardens is finally getting it's due. It's been an underground cult hit for ages and I've been trying to share it with as many people as possible (much to my friends' chagrin, as most of them can't see what the big deal is). I'm thrilled it's on Broadway now and I hope the musical gets more people to see the video.
There is a great clip floating around out there that is not in either DVD. It's got Little Edie talking about the first time she ever saw a television set. It was a time when only the richest people had them. It's fascinating. I haven't been able to find it since I first saw it. But if you can track it down it's quite fascinating.
Love you guys. Happy Easter and Happy Faustian Birthday. :)
Love,
Pup Don

Wow!
Yet another fantastic interview! Guys you are getting better and better. Great person to interview and even greater interviewers!
Marc, I too remember the Red Barn fast food chain. The old Red Barn here in Brookville is now a porn shop!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FAUSTO!

Said by: Mistress Chapstinka at April 9, 2007 03:19 PM
to be honest.. i like the "cast" shows better than the "guest shows" especially when guests are on the phone. however, Lizz was such a great guest with perfect timing and charm. you 3 worked together well made for another amazing show! well done.
Said by: Ben Consoli at April 9, 2007 03:41 PM
Lizz is a potty mouth, and I LOVE her! What an informed, hillarious, and obviously very savvy guest. Thanks for having another wonderful guest!
Said by: Bully at April 9, 2007 03:51 PM
As a longtime fan of Lizz I've always enjoyed her especially when she was on Air America. I was so sad when they closed up shop, so you can imagine my joy when I started listening to today's show and what a great chemistry the three of you have! Thank you Marc and Fausto and this podcast.
Lizz Winstead has always been a visionary person and as a mainstream television figure her embrace of the internet as and coming on the Feast of Fools proves it.
The world is changing for the better and on this show where you can see that change occur.
I got my tickets to the show! I'm really looking forward to seeing her in Chicago next Monday and hopefully running into you two in the lobby.
I'd love to see Cyndi Lauper come on the show and talk about her HRC tour.

GREAT SHOW! Lizz, I want to have coffee with you sometime. You’re not just fun but-as they used to say in school-so bright.

What a cool and funny interview! So glad you guys made a show today although it’s still a holiday…Well at least here in Germany! Lizz was so cool!
I especially loved her responses to the breakdown! Wish I could see her show but over 4000 miles is a good argument against a short trip to see her show! Damn, damn, damn!
Anyways loved the show, would love to here her again on the FOF!
Lots of Love!

Lovely....even though the digs towards Minnesotan accents. luckily (or hopefully) I don't have one , but I've lived areound the metro area and not out in the boonies. Lizz was a fab guest and I've heard of the gardens thing before, but its always good to hear it again.
Her Political opinions and just fun personality was a great thing. another great interview.
Said by: Rochelle (from MN) at April 9, 2007 11:07 PM
WOW, what a great interview. Lovin it and I didn't know the talent behind how the Daily Show got started, and I've only started watching it with Jon Stewart as host, so it was great to hear the backstory. Keep it up you all, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Fausto.

This was a great show! It was really nice to hear Lizz Winstead talking politics and humor. Maybe she could help Hillary (Clinton) and Obama... not! I'm still voting green, LOL.

Loved the chat with Lizz! One of our best special guests.
Said by: Boston Bob at April 11, 2007 05:54 AM
Another great interview. I never realized Craig Kilborne (sp?) made some rude comment to Lizz. I just thought he couldn't stick with a job, hopping from ESPN to Comedy Central, then to CBS. I learn many useful things from this show.
Said by: David at April 11, 2007 09:48 PM
p>That was one of the best interviews I've heard on FOF, and I've heard a bunch (although often a week late like this one).
Liz was great on Unfiltered on Air America and everyone was sad to see that show go.
I wonder if Liz could hook you up with Racheal Maddow or David Bender? If you don't know they are both out and proud and also two of the best political commentators in the business. Both on Air America.
Racheal was a co-host with Liz on Unfiltered and is also a frequent commentator on CNN and MSNBC. I think she has a regular column in the Advocate, though I could be wrong about that.
David has a show on Air America following Racheal Maddow that is fantastic political commentary. 30 or so years of inside the beltway experience from a gay man makes for some interesting broadcasting. Check out his long interviews with Gore Vidal if you need proof.
Regardless, great show. I thought you had perfected your interview technique and then you go and do an even better one.
Love you guys, every podcast is great.
