FOF #501 - Southern Charm - 03.29.07

Podcast
Summer is just around the corner
and I'm feeling, I say, I'm feeling like I'm in a Southern mood. Like Scarlet O'Hara from "Gone with the Wind" or Ouiser Boudreaux from "Steel Magnolias." I feel the South is going to rise again, this time with sexy-non-racist results.

I feel like a strong warm wind is blowing through my gauze curtains. Heavens!

We begin today's show with a cocktail recipe that has a lot of gin and pink grapefruit juice, spiked with a lil' mushed basil leaves. Its quite nice, however we just can't decide on the name.

Here is the recipe:
Crush in a mortar and pestle:
1/2 tsp. of sugar
4 leaves of basil
Rinse the vessel with 1 oz. of fresh pink grapefruit juice, 1 oz of gin and 1/2 oz of orange flavored liquor and put it all into a shaker filled with ice. Shake into a tall glass with some soda water. It's delicious!

What do you think we should name this cocktail?

Join Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós as we talk about super-cute actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt turning the tables on his paparazzi with sexy results, John McCain's MySpace page getting hacked with sexy results, the unusual musical taste of gifted british teens and how dog food can make you sick, duh.

I don't care how hungry you get, or how much Nomi Malone liked it in the film Showgirls, please don't eat any Doggie Chow. Go vegan.

Our Feast of Fools family contest ends tomorrow! So make sure to email your entries today.

Serving it to you fresh and hot with lots of gay charm- Feast of Fools.

Shouldn't that drink be called "The Lady Bunny?"
Hi there Fausto!

Said by: Jason at March 29, 2007 06:44 AM

pink BMW!

you should have signature drinks for Amanda and Ronnie!

501 never sounded so gay!

Said by: Juan Jaime at March 29, 2007 07:06 AM

Hey Guys,

How about Butterfly McQueen for the drink?

The story about the woman showing her dog how to eat reminded me of something else. There was a woman around here who used to let her toy poodle lick the sweet tea off her lips. Well, she had surgery and was put on some super strong pain killers. The drugs knocked her out for hours. When she woke up, she discovered that her poodle had eaten her lips off.

Said by: Cliff Dix(from Atlanta) at March 29, 2007 08:25 AM

That dog-lip story is crazy, Cliff Dix! And to THINK that I was seriously considering getting a toy poodle for a pet!Shiish! I'm so glad I read your comment first!

Said by: Patricia Fernós at March 29, 2007 09:24 AM

Hey, Marc! YOU drink flaxseed oil! I myself spread it on my toast with a little jam and some ricotta cheese. It's keepin me pretty healthy, and it tastes good, besides! I still haven't tried taking organic coconut oil, like Miss Ronnie does - or did, the last time I saw her... SHE claims wonderful results from doing so.

Said by: Patricia Fernós at March 29, 2007 09:31 AM

Patricia,
Sorry to creep you out with my poodle story. My mom has had a poodle for 13 years and her lips are still intact.
By the way, my partner, Glen and I have flaxseed oil every morning on our oatmeal. We use it instead of butter.

Said by: Cliff Dix(from Atlanta) at March 29, 2007 09:40 AM

Hi from Texas y'all! Great show - keep it up..

Said by: Mo at March 29, 2007 12:14 PM

Thanks for the shoutout again guys! You make it sound as if I did some huge, burdensome favor by showing up to the expo, but it really was a pleasure on my part to see Marc and help promote the show I love and adore so much.

I think that today's drink should be called a "Southern Sunrise." It evokes the pink color and intoxicating effect of a foggy sunrise in the steamy South. What do you think?

Said by: Milton in NYC at March 29, 2007 12:33 PM

Hi guys!! How about..."Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"?

Said by: Lenka at March 29, 2007 12:53 PM

Yes I do drink Flax seed oil. It's nasty but I choke it down.

Said by: Marc at March 29, 2007 03:46 PM

Fun show, but I disagree with your mop preference. The old fashioned string mops that you guys seem to like really begin to reek after a bit. I much prefer my swifter, even if it does look like I am mopping with a diaper on a stick. By the way, what are the benefits of flax oil? Oh, and thanks for the link to the JG-L youtube clip. I'm a big JG-L fan.

Said by: Andy in Brookville at March 29, 2007 04:42 PM

Andy,
You have to rinse the mops out and let them dry. If they start to stink really bad its time to get a new mop.

Flax seed oil is rich in Omega Fatty Acids.

Said by: Marc at March 29, 2007 04:57 PM

Hi, Fausto and Marc! I enjoyed today's show, which I listened to as I went on a nice walk outdoors. I have to agree with Andy in Brookville (although I also disagree with Andy's choice of mop!). I love my sponge mop which I use like... ah...... once a month? OK, once every two months? It does such a nice job! (But hey, I've been vacuuming almost every week....!!! And I'm very religious about doing the dishes and taking out the garbage!!!!)

On closet celebrities, I'd really like to put in a request for you guys to talk about or share your thoughts on my favorite mystery star, the very Puerto Rican Ricky Martin! Queer Puerto Rican scholars like Frances Negron-Muntaner (in her book Boricua Pop) and José Quiroga (in his book Tropics of Desire) have talked about him, the Advocate had him on their cover, but you guys don't seem to mention him....

As to the drink, The Lady Bunny sounds good, but you could also just call it "A Little Bit of Nirvana".

OH.... and how could I forget. I hope my purchase of a Gravy t-shirt and of a Best of FOF Data DVD helps you out this week! (I already have the DVD, it's a gift for my friend Jim Leija, who also loves you....). Muchos saludos, LARRY IN ANN ARBOR

ps. Hi, Patricia!

Said by: Larry La Fountain at March 29, 2007 05:02 PM

Hey Marc & Fausto,

Okay, if you've never done this before, as a fan of Showgirls you MUST go to the scene where Nomi pushes Cristal down the stairs and watch it in slow motion. We sat around one night, drunk, and watched it over and over for like an hour! They've got some old man in drag as Gina's stunt double.. HI-larious!

Haven't heard you guys mention BSG in a while.. What did you think of the finale? Do you ever listen to Ron Moore's Podcast? It's pretty good.. very insightful.

They really need to release Song of the South. I dunno how my African American friends feel about it, but to me it's a Disneyfied slice of our cultural history. I studied black literature in college, the Harlem Renaissance, and it's so rich! I have a bootleg copy of the movie, but it would be great to see it come out in DVD to see how well it does. Perhaps it'll open the debate about our cultural history versus what some groups would rather we forget.

How about you name your new cocktail The Fool's Magnolia?

I've always had a feeling that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is gay.. way before the speculation, when he was on 3rd Rock I just got the vibe.

I'm off to Australia for the next month, let Miss Ronnie know I'll be sending her a little surprise from her favorite land down under. Any listeners in the Melbourne area e-mail me if you wanna grab a drink and gossip about the FoF..

xo,
- Mike J

Dear Fausto & Marc:
Your Podcast is awesome, I love your guests and friends. You make me laugh, cry...okay maybe not. But you guys rock. You've got the best podcast and we need something like this in our very tight a$$ed state of CT. Each day I look forward to listening to your show. Keep it real! Sal-E & Jo-Jo are intense! I'll keep listening because you guys have the best personaly out there, all others are lame & Dry. Hugs!

Said by: Richard at March 29, 2007 07:30 PM

Loved the show guys!!! Thanks for the shout out Marc! Oddly enough, I had just watched my Brer Rabbit (bootleg) while cooking dinner. We were talking about it at work today because I told my assistant to "PLEEEEZZZ don't throw me into that there briar patch!!!" and she had no clue what the hell I was talking about. One of my favorites. Damn 20 somethings... XO, A.

FOF rules! All others drool!

Said by: Victor in Texas at March 29, 2007 11:06 PM

I have mixed feelings about whether or not "Song of the South" should ever be released on DVD.

On the one hand, the Uncle Remus stories are valuable for some of the values they teach, like being happy where you are, never believing you can run from trouble, and using brains before strength to get out of a sticky situation.

On the other hand, the use of the stereotypical "black accents" for the animal characters, not to mention the portrayal of happy slaves could also be construed as reinforcing racist stereotypes.

Personally, I would let it sit in "the vault."

Said by: David at March 29, 2007 11:25 PM

Signature drinks for all the regulars sounds like a great idea! What should I put in the Ronnie, Marc and Amanda drinks?

I know Sal-E's drink needs to be made with that booze that has little specks of gold in it.

Said by: Fausto at March 30, 2007 12:21 AM

500 shows! Congrats. Fausto, Marc, Ronnie and Greg...Loved the show! I was born on Guam so I loved Marc's comments....

Said by: JP at March 30, 2007 07:13 AM

Fausto & Marc - I so agree with you on the swifter thing. What a joke! The sad part is this is another "convienence" item that add to our growing landfill problem. Where do you all think those swifter pads go when you toss em? More crap for the landfills. And it is all so that the corporations can get rich selling another razor product - give the handle away so you can overcharge them for a lifetime of refills for the unit.

So much better to buy a reusable mop. Or just go au-natural :)

Later guys.

Hey hey hey guys!

Love your show, I don't miss one... period! I feel you are kind of my missing friends. Hehehe. I am from Panama City Panama (Central America) living at Barcelona, Spain. Hope you can visit here. My husband and I will gladly tour you this city. I promise to write you more often!

Bye,
FELIX

After spending 2 days with Marc at the Expo, I have to tell you we saw some really sloppy gays. Boys that looked like they needed to eat a sandwich, because they were so skinny, old, old queens, someone, bless her heart, that thought she was Tina Turner, and lesbians in every possible size and shape imaginable. (Watch out for the ones in the wheelchairs).
They come and stay the entire day (for what can really be completed in 30 minutes or less). They just walk around in circles collecting flyers and pens, not to mention handfulls of free peanuts and (not so tasty) peach candies from our fabulous friend Amanda across the way at the Atlanta toursim booth.

I also enjoyed spending time with John Q. Sanchez, Jason, Jace, Milton (and anyone I can' remember).

Said by: Gary in NYC at March 30, 2007 11:25 AM

I <3 my Swiffer Wet Jet!

...and that drink sounds tasty. Putting basil in all sorts of drinks has become a new obsession of mine. Basil infused vodka with tonic water is yummy as is basil infused tangerine/orange juice mixed with vodka.

Said by: Corey at March 31, 2007 12:24 AM

Hi guys,
Love the show.

On Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I found his journal on the paparrazi very interesting, and thought you might like to read it too.

"It doesn’t normally happen that paparazzi photographers pay me any attention when I’m not working. In fact, it only ever happened once (thank god) that I can think of. Luckily I had my video camera on me when it did. A friend and I were just walking down the street in Manhattan when we passed these two photographers who were sitting outside the entrance of some hotel, presumably waiting to photograph somebody who was staying there. I didn’t think much of them until, a block or so later, they came running up and started to take my picture. I tried to be nice and politely ask them not to. They were neither nice nor polite. And that’s when I remembered I had my camera in my bag. So that’s where the movie starts. The only other thing I’ll say is (and I had trouble deciding whether or not to be so blunt with my opinion, but here goes) I do believe that the myth of “Celebrity” is not just innocently shallow entertainment, but a powerful and fundamental part of a larger movement revolving around greed, apathy and hierarchy that is currently dragging us down, down, down, lower and scarier, and perhaps weaker than we’ve ever, ever been. Smile!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - camera, editing"

Hi guys,
Just wanted to put my two pence in and say I love these shows where it's just the two of you, or you two and 1-2 of the regulars like Amanda, Ronnie, Sal-E, Greg Shapiro, or Caesar Torres (where is he lately?). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the celebrities too, and I know it's a talking point to get more listeners and sponsorship--but the funniest shit usually happens when it's just you guys doing what you do best!

Laugh out loud moment of today was re: John McCain being on Battlestar Galactica, losing an eye, poisoning his wife---I am such a geek.

Also, is there any chance you'll be making the blue t-shirts with the same type of fabric as the red ones? I adore my red one and wear it all the time, but the blue one sits in the closet (also I can't wash it because Marc signed it!). The fit on the red one was much much better than the blue for us big-boobs-big-hips types.
