FOF #498 - Everybody Loves Eric Himan - 03.26.07

Podcast
Eric Himan is back!
Also known as the gay Johnny Cash, singer-songwriter Eric Himan is in a different place in his head from the last time he was in the house.

After taking six months off to figure out where he wanted to go in his musical career, Eric Himan returned with a renewed sense of passion, a solo tour and two new albums- "Everywhere All At Once" and his acoustic "There's Gotta Be Something."

He's now running his own record company and flying solo, at the helm of his career and future. From the looks of things, it looks like smooth sailing ahead. I've never seen him sound so fresh and look so happy.

Join Eric Himan and his boyfriend Ryan, as Marc and I as we double date with them to talk about Eric's new albums, being confused for someone in recovery, why he got those tattoos on his arms, and the therapeutic value of song-writing.

In his song "Acquired Taste" Eric explores the idea of being a bad guy and sneaking into guys' bedrooms late at night. I don't understand why that would upset anyone. Would you be upset if you saw this hot tattooed stud crawling through your bedroom window late at night for a little romantic rendezvous? I think not.

Also on today's show, when fast food franchises are the healthier alternative, cats that speak Chinese, Naomi Campbell's custodian sentence, and music as a form of punishment.

Check out Eric Himan's tour dates on his website, www.erichiman.com Go get your photo taken with him wearing your own Feast of Fools t-shirt! Check out the great photos we took of him and his tattoos.

Let's give them something to think about, let's listen to the Feast of Fools together!

Hi FOF Gang...

OK this is unrelated to todays show, but I thought I'd put it out there.

I just looked online for tickets to see 'Eating Out 2' at the London gay/bi/trans film festival and it's £8.60 which is nearly $17!

Why are the very people trying to promote gay/bi/trans art trying to sting us!

Ps I've also noticed that a lot of gay dvds on ebay/amazon etc are all overpriced compared to similar items from the mainstream.

I realise its a niche market, but why are our gay brothers and sisters intentionally trying to rip us off?

Long live the poor gays!

x

LOL, listening to today's episode and I just heard Eric say that the only time he had a problem was where we saw him. How Pittsburgh!

Guys .. what a great show. I still love Eric Himan even though he's married now. You opened the show with my son's favorite song 9Hey Bartender) ... whenever he hears it he wants me to play it again. He's 7. He also prefers the Live version.

I'll be downloading the album from itunes in a few minutes (Via the FOF link). Thanks for making the drive from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio entertaining.

It's great to see how artists change and grow through the years. I hope Eric Himan is around for many years to come.

Said by: Daryl at March 26, 2007 09:41 AM

Uh...Gary C,

Could be the whole idea that gay people have tons of disposable income as they supposedly do not have children and other such expenses. Sad to say, because I include myself, but many gay people will buy a lot of things that they want, rather than need.

This is something on which retailers, promoters, and ad agencies rely.

The worst part is, if we don't support such events as you mention, venues will no longer book them.

Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

Hope you get to see your film.

Eric and I have the same star tattoos! (the one on his left arm)! CRAZY!! I have never seen anyone else with that tattoo! They are Identical!

Another great interview-- Eric is such a hottie.. and immensely talented. It's really great that you're starting to get a chance to do second interviews with some of the musicians you have interviewed before... we get to see what they've done since the last time you talked to them, how they've evolved, and what's ahead for them. Next time we hear from Eric maybe he'll be headlining a stadium tour? Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see on the Feast of Fools :)

Said by: RcktMan at March 26, 2007 10:03 PM

Great show!
I love his sound! It's great!

Said by: Renata at March 27, 2007 05:39 AM

Bartender!, I can't stop singing that song. everytime I go to a gay bar I start mumbling "Why do I always fall inlove..."

My first comment in weeks, sorry, I've been busy, not that you notice my comments or anything, but I like to contribute a little since I can't give any money.

Said by: Juan Jaime at March 27, 2007 05:50 AM

Loved this episode.

After I heard "Bartender" a month or so ago, I had to get it.

I love his voice and style. He's fun to listen too, and you can tell that there's actually a purpose to his music (unlike a lot of music today)

Said by: Refreshments at March 27, 2007 11:08 AM

I'm another one who's had the song "Bartender" stuck in his head since I heard it for the first time..

And if Eric ever does want to do some shows out here in West Asia, I'll be happy to host him!
(His boyfriend can watch or join in, if he'd like.)

Said by: Robbie from Jerusalem at March 27, 2007 11:33 AM

Love Eric's music and I can't wait to see him and Levi Kreis live here in Los Angeles in May. Saw them both last year and it was killer show.

Said by: Don Bean at March 28, 2007 12:26 AM

Once again a great episode guys, I've been into Eric's music for ages and its always a blast when he's on the show, keep up the good work

Said by: iain at March 28, 2007 04:10 AM

Fausto & Marc - Terrific show. Love Eric's music and he is such a hottie. If you're ever single Eric, give me a call ;-)

But moving to Tulsa, wow. Do they have gay people in Tulsa -- LOL. Yeah I know: I live in Va. so I shouldn't talk. Well take care. And come to the Washington DC area sometime - there's lots of Lesbians and gay folk that would come to your show.

PoloDrew

P.S. I listen every day but have been lazy bout posting comments. Will try to be more active on the boards. But is there any plan to make this a more robust community site - convesation threads and such?

Said by: PoloDrew at March 28, 2007 08:52 AM

Just saw Gary's note about the tickets for Eating Out 2. I doubt they're ripping folks off. It's hard for an out gay artist to make a living - so lets start supporting them.

I'd pay $17 to see the show. I'd pay more if there was a backstage pass to meet Jim V. Such a hottie :)

Peace

Said by: PoloDrew at March 28, 2007 08:56 AM

Great Show.... I'm glad you had Eric on... He is SO HOT!

Said by: ScOtT at March 28, 2007 09:39 PM

Hey there Marc and Fausto,

Thank you for this wonderful show with Eric Himan. He is just so lovely and charming.

We've never really been into his music, but after listening to this show we bought a couple of his songs on iTunes (of course, following the link from this website...sending you love and a little moolah too!!!). We're loving those songs. They're fabulous.

Thank you for bringing us fabulous gay independent musicians. We would never hear of them if not for your showcases of their work. Especially seeing that we're on the other hemisphere altogether.

Just by listening to your shows, we have now downloaded the following artists off iTunes and they're singing sweet melodies in our iPods:- Eric Himan, Levi Kreis, Christopher Dahlman, Nedra Johnson, Jill Sobule, Cathy Richardson and Gail Ann Dorsey.

We'd love to get Jim Verraros too someday but he's not available on Australian iTunes...yet.

So thank you for bringing us Eric and all these wonderful artists.

You enlighten us with bright rainbow coloured queer talent and we love you for it.

I love that you had EDric back on. It was so much fun listening to the interview.

I havent been able to stop listening to the new album. Its phenomenal!

Can we say YYYYUUUMMMM he is one hot guy Kinda like Marc & Sal-E

Said by: Travis at April 1, 2007 05:53 PM

Calling Eric the Gay Johnny Cash is totally under-estimating him. Johnny Cash is the only artist that could sing in monotone. Eric is much better. Thanx for having him on again
