FOF #497 - Living la Vida Musto - 03.23.07

Podcast
Cultural commentator Michael Musto really enjoys his job.
For over twenty years, Michael turned his passion for NYC's nightlife and celebrity culture into a genre defining gossip column that has been the bread and butter for the weekly newspaper, the Village Voice.

In his new book "La Dolce Musto" includes a pu-pu platter of his "greatest hits" of his popular gossip column in the Village Voice. A mainstay of pop culture and a chronicle of the "hip and hopeful" Michael Musto's outrageous weekly column has always been a pioneer in gay issues, celebrity news and politics.

Much like myself, Michael Musto's identity was forged in the AIDS crisis in the late 80s/early 90s. In many ways, Michael distinguished himself from other gossip columnists with his honesty about his own sexuality and his social consciousness that came out of his experience with ACT-UP (the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power.)

Join Michael, Marc and me as we talk about Clay Aiken and Bary Manilow's Christmas Special, what kind of men Anderson Cooper likes, the real reason why Britney Spears shaved all her hair off and why anybody gives a damn.

Go see Michael Musto's book signing here in Chicago at Sidetrack on Wednesday March 28 from 6-9PM.

The podcast that dishes out all the dolce without any of the gabana- Feast of Fools.

Another award winning interview guys. Keep them coming! It's interesting to see the human side of these celebrities on your show. I really like his answer for the vagina monologues question.

My guess for Anderson Cooper is he is attracted to men who are not like himself, in other words, men who are not rich, white and privileged.

GOOD INTERVIEW/CONVERSATION TODAY!

ALWAYS GOOD TO HEAR YOU GUYS INTERVIEW SOMEBODY NEW (TO ME)!

Said by: Martin at March 23, 2007 01:26 PM

I'm thinking Anderson Cooper likes a man who's a little more blue collar type. Not like him too much at all. Since he is, essentially, a Vanderbilt, he probably comes from a pretty upper class upbringing. I'm sure he's probably into a big dirty, gruff construction worker considering where he's been on-camera...though I have a feeling Anderson's a top. ;-)

Said by: adam at March 23, 2007 02:32 PM

But then, I could just be confusing his attractions for mine ;-)

So great to hear Michael Musto! He's such a fixture in the gay media -- not just a talented writer, but an enigma!!

Another great and informative interview...if only Michael would reveal his sources!

Said by: Mac at March 23, 2007 05:32 PM

Said by: Matthew at March 23, 2007 05:40 PM

Michael Musto is a big fat loveable girl, thank you guys for combining to great tastes into one delicious package: LA DOLCE MUSTO + FEAST OF FOOLS = HEAVEN.

I want to know why Kevin Aviance shaves his hair. Is he as crazy as Britney?

Said by: Misstress Chapstinka at March 23, 2007 06:37 PM

This was awesomely awesome! This possibly might be the best I've heard from you peoples..! You should be sooper prouds!!! I hope you are!!!

Said by: ~Meep~ at March 23, 2007 06:51 PM

I think Anderson Cooper prefers Asian men. I don't know why, I just think he does. Call it an instinct.

I prefer Latino men myself. :)

Said by: Justin at March 24, 2007 12:07 AM

Oooh thank you Justin!

Personally, I am glad that Anderson Cooper did not bring up the fact that Thomas Roberts was gay in the same interview where he was talking about being molested by a priest. We've had too many people in the public eye equating being gay with having been molested, so we didn't need that equation being implied by an interview.

As far as outing a closeted celebrity, it really depends upon the circumstances. If somebody is trying to establish a career, has not acted or spoken in a homophobic manner, and the revelation about their private life could wreck their career before it got a start, then it does not need to be mentioned yet. If, however, somebody is going around badmouthing GLBTQ people and working to ensure that the law continues to treat us like second-class citizens (like, say, Rev. Ted Haggard), then not only should they be outed, but it should be done in as public a way as possible.

As far as the "hinting around about who might or might not be gay" thing, that to me betrays a subconscious fear that the person will cease to be important, so he/she dangles the carrot of a rumor out in front of people to keep their interest going, and possibly keep that "fifteen minute" timer rewound.

As far as what kind of man Anderson Cooper may or may not like, it has little impact on me, so it's hardly worth my time. I feel that when Mr. Cooper is ready to let us know with whom he hangs, then he will do so.

As far as who I like, I do tend to be attracted to blue eyes, and from there, it all depends on the "total package."

Dear Fabulous Feast of Fools Boys (& Michael Musto too!),

While I think it's fantastic that Anderson Cooper is gayer than Christmas, I wish you'd ease up on the guy. All the constant chatter is beginning to sound a lot like accusations. If you honestly want the guy to come out, gossiping about him seems a little misconceived. Futilely calling him out on his homosexuality only helps to create a greater misconception that coming out is a bad thing.

Because I haven't followed Michael Musto's work long (I'd seen him on Keith Olbermann's show and read a handful of articles), I wasn't sure at first whether his intent was to disgrace Mr. Cooper or welcome him into gay community with open arms and a bitchy comment about his shoes.
As a straight girl, I'm certainly not one to wish The Coop un-gay. Perhaps it's just the hag in me, but I like that he wants to be defined as something he's become (a journalist) and not his sexuality. He's certainly not denying it, either, from what any accomplished googler can find out in about five minutes. Gay bars and GLAAD awards and all that makes for an interesting story… until it's rehashed for a fifteenth time.

As smart as he obviously is, I can only assume he's got a reason for not fully coming out. It very well may not be a good reason, but I trust that it's something he's thought enough about. As any of my gay friends will tell me, being a closet-case was a complete waste and being fully out is how they've wished they'd always been.

On one hand, I'm as curious as anyone, but is it really feasible that he'll out himself on his own show? Or anyone elses? Especially since (as noted in numerous articles) he'd made the decision to keep his private life private long before becoming a familiar face. I think it's unfortunate if he doesn't feel comfortable enough to do so (or even worse, has possibly been advised not to. That'd be shitty.), but I grudgingly accept this predicament for the time being, because the alternative- being pushed out- feels unfair. Then again, I'm not a gossip columnist, where as it'd be my job to unravel someone's personal life.

I don't think Anderson is a 'lost cause' though. An undue target, sure, but by no means dismissible. When he does come out (as much integrity as this guy has in his reporting, I can't imagine him not publicly owning up at some point), I hope it's reported on graciously by those who care enough to be civil about it. This doesn't deserve to be made a spectacle of- for anyone. It's a hot-button issue, sure, but that doesn't negate the expectation of simple respect.

Bottom line, I wish he would come out, but it’s his choice to make.

Excellent interview guys! A local host here in Pittsburgh interviewed him a few months ago and it was very good, but not as entertaining. He seems very easy to talk to and I think you hit the right tone with the whole thing. Who knew about him and Ms. Love??? lol :) XO.

Said by: Aaron C at March 25, 2007 10:48 PM

As much as I'd love to know who's gay and who isn't, I'm not sure I'm OK with outing folks... Of course, if they're dumb enough to go do things that other people are going to find out about, well...

Said by: Robbie from Jerusalem at March 26, 2007 12:44 PM

I find the whole debate of outing people to be ridiculous in 2007. There is nothing wrong with being gay. It WONT hurt your career unless you let it hurt it. Be brave babies, and let the truth be told.

Just like Misstress Chapstinka, Anderson Cooper is a big queen!

Said by: Misstress Chapstinka at March 26, 2007 01:38 PM

Let me know when Cooper comes out...I'd do him..

Said by: got80s at March 27, 2007 09:00 AM

Great show guys... except for this Musto guy... What a conceited tool. Ugg... ME! ME! ME! I haven't been able to stand this guy since I saw him on "Win Ben Stein's Money" a couple of years ago... He is a one-trick pony who has been doing the same trick for the past 20 years.

Said by: ScOtT at March 28, 2007 09:52 PM

Hey Eveyone! Just wanted to say how hilarious the last few shows have been! Keep it up! xoxo from Cincinnati.

A bit OT, but Michael Musto's latest stint for OUT magazine is such an incredibly bitchy thing to do.
Serisouly. How fucking rude.
