FOF #489 - Oscar Diva Sing-Off - 02.26.07

Podcast
J-Hud won!
She is an Oscar Winner 2007 so divas, gay men and plus-sized gals everywhere can now celebrate. Congratulations to Chicago's very own Jennifer Hudson for winning "Best Supporting Actress" for her diva-licious portrayal of Jennifer Holiday as Effie White in the big screen adaptation of Dreamgirls. In her acceptance speech she thanked "God" three times and so did we.

Last night was a historic Academy Awards ceremony as talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres became the first openly gay person to take on the difficult job of hosting the event. We think she passed with passed with flying colors. This was a BIG deal, and I'm not talking about J-Hud's weight loss.

Power lesbian Ellen DeGeneres looked simply fabulous in her velvet red suit, white gay wedding tuxedo, and cobalt blue vest-pant suit. In case you missed it, she was in red, white and blue, very patriotic, despite, as Gregg Shapiro points out, she was breaking the patriarchy of hosting the Oscars.

The only other possible lesbian to have hosted the awards was actress Agnes Moorehead when took the job of co-hosting the Oscars in 1948. The jury is still out her lesbianism but the rumors abound.

We were cringing with anxiety hoping that Ellen didn't do her "dance" and fortunately she didn't. But what was up with those confetti cannons at the end of the show? You know, the same ones Rosie loves to use on the View. Why do lesbians love confetti cannons?

On today's Oscarcast (yes, we own the domain name) our in-house Jewish divas Amanda Steinstein and Gregg Shapiro join Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós to give you a play-by-play (or gay-by-gay) recap of the Superbowl for the Rest of us: the Oscars. Winners and losers, and great moments you might have missed.

One of my favorite moments really was J-Hud and Beyoncé's sing-off where they tried to dominate each other in the ironically titled song, "Listen." Ouch! It was a little painful to watch Beyoncé go berzerk trying to outdo Jennifer. That weave almost sun off her head and I swear you could see daggers coming out of Beyoncé's eyes. If the drama didn't happen on the set of Dreamgirls it did tonight.

The company formerly known as Apple Computer (they are just Apple, Inc. now) premiered their first iPhone commercial, which I thought was BORING. Cute, but not as exciting as the now ubiquitous iTunes silouette ads. It reminded me of the "Think Different" ad campaign, the commercial used mostly footage from television shows during the major event to celebrate film.

The real fabulous Apple moment of the night was at the very beginning with the montage of nominees created by the famed "Switch" ad film director Errol Morris which in similar fashion had all the nominees talking to the camera while a bouncy music played in the background. Check it out here. And if you want to walk down memory lane, click here to see our version of the "ads."

Did y'all see Cameron Diaz? She looks like she got boob implants put into her cheeks, and that turd brown doo is totally not working! She needs to be on the next episode of Plastic Surgery Gone Wrong...

It was a magical night for the Oscars. It was my first time watching it. Ellen was fantastic. Kudos to Jennifer Hudson! Beyonce must be steaming at the ears.

Eddie Murphy should not have put out his dumb movie Norbit at this time. I hear that when he lost for best supporting actor he stormed out of the room and was never heard from again.

Dreamgirls performance was wonderful! Jennifer's right boob was about to fall out of her dress. Beyonce's weave was about to pop out her head. Anika Noni Rose made sure we remembered that she's a singer too. Did I mention Ellen was fantastic?

Thats my take on the Oscars 2007 ;-)

Best. Oscarcast. Ever!

I believe that someday it will be one of you guys up there hosting the Oscars.

On the subject of Ellen's dancing: she had promised Barbara Walters that she would not dance. The stepping during the gospel number could have counted as dancing, though. The gospel choir was campy and fun and just right to set the tone for the rest of the evening.

I don't mind Cameron's hair color, although she was cuter as a blonde. I do agree that the hairstyle needs to go. I thought when I saw her on the red carpet that wind had hit it and messed it up, but when she came out to present, I realized it was that way on purpose. Her dress was fabulous, though.

I was glad we did not have Beyonce singing all of the nominated songs, like she did in '05. I still have nightmares about her train wreck of a duet with Josh Groban.

Overall, great Oscar show, and Ellen should definitely be asked back. But, not before Robin Williams hosts. He IS an Academy Award winner, after all.

I've tried so hard but aside from 'The Mask' and 'In Her Shoes' I just can't stand Diaz. Still, she went with an outfit that was a bit risky, but she pulled it off. Jennifer Hudson and Helen Mirren won so overall I was pleased. Marc Anthony looked good for a change. I wonder if Jakey G was thinking: "Where's my one."

Great show today FOF crew! I love the oscar specials you do.

Ps It amazes me how you record, produce. edit and post the show 5 days a week. There must be times when you can't be bothered? x

OMG! I watched live the oscars yesterday with my mom and she always cryes! Every year is torture, because everytime someone thanks their mother she says "see, they apreciate their mothers". And this year at the beginning when the white backround their all start that "I thank my mom" thing again, but suddently one guys says "I don't thank my parents, I have nothing to be thankful for thowards my parents" And I was so happy because my mom is no Patricia Fernós and finally someone stood up respresenting all the unwanted kids like me!!!

Anyway, great fashion as always on the red carpet, but PLEASE Jennifer Hudson weareng a plain brown Oscar De La renta not very flattering by itself and covering it up with that "bolero" or jacket in an old-goldish color that she borrowed from Sal-E, Come on! She knew this was her year, she could have asked for a colorful dress that fitted her fine and without a techno-gay-biker jacket!

The gay wedding white suit was Ellen's best, she should've started the show with it, not with the fucsia velvet one!

That little girl from Little Miss Sunshine bought her dress at Wall-Mart, clearly.

Did you guys see Jennifer HOLIDAY on the E! pre-show singing And I'm Telling You? Amazing, she should've been invited to the Oscars and she and J-Hud could've sang together!

Those people making the movie posters with their shadows, amazing! And for the best costumes award, they brought people with the actuall costumes!
The best oscars so far, great writing, SOME great songs (in a bad order) and wonderfull things never featured before.

Beyonce was well pissed off. Bless her little heart! She just has to know that she can't outsing the J-Hud. But my, wasn't it fun to watch her try...weave flying everywhere, eyes darting about maniacally (apparently she thinks that shows that she can act), voice wailing at all pitches. She did try to look all magnanimous (bet you can't say THAT Fausto!) at Jennifer. Bless!

I just hope Jennifer doesn't let all this go to her head, and she makes some good choices on her roles. Don't want people thinking this was a fluke.

Ellen was funny enough, but she didn't have enough time on stage. I would have liked to have seen more of her.

It would have been nice to see Eddie win to cap off a great career. But he didn't do the schmoozing needed to win it. His own fault really. Shame!

Cameron Diaz looked rubbish! Rinko Kikuchi totally redeemed herself after the Globes! What the hell was up with Jodie Foster? Gael Garcia Benal looked HOTT! Was that Kirsten Dunst's twin? And I still think Reece didn't deserve the Oscar. It should have gone to Jakey G! What a delicious hunk of man meat!

Will Smith's kid was clearly the best dressed there.

Said by: Jason at February 26, 2007 07:32 PM

Fausto, Marc and the FOF gang,
I was lucky enough to go to the Grammy Awards a couple years ago. During the commercial breaks they move the mic and stage around a bit. They come out and touch up the make-up of the host (that year it was Queen Latifah) and they play instrumental music. Nothing to thrilling but if you have a chance to see any of these awards live, it's really cool and you get to see lots of stars.

Said by: Mark Delgrosso at February 26, 2007 08:45 PM

Am I the only one who noticed the big collective inhalation and holding of breath when Melissa Etheridge thanked her wife?

I'm sorry, but Cameron's dress was so bad, it's like she just rolled out of bed and decided to wrap herself in bed sheets.

Whoo Hoo! For our leader...

Said by: LL at February 26, 2007 09:15 PM

It seems that Oprah didn't play the "gay card" while interviewing Ellen.

Said by: NIck at February 26, 2007 11:52 PM

Someone pointed out that I accidentally spread some disinformation, so I want to clear it up here and now:

The year Matt and Trey wore gowns to the Oscars, their date was indeed Mark Shaiman, not Weird Al.

So Shaiman me.

Now, David...if Robin Williams ever hosts the Oscars, you'll find me outside the Kodak theater with a very large hook. ESPECIALLY after what he did to "Blame Canada" while Matt and Trey were their in their lovely gowns.

THAT was the biggest fiasco since the 1989 Oscar's opening number...

I love you guys, but-- sorry-- Ellen was BORRR-ing!!!!

Said by: RicoPablo at February 27, 2007 08:48 AM

Oh Amanda that video is just wrong. It gave me flashblacks. I didn't watch the Oscars for years after that.

In retrospect, Ellen was boring. I think I was just excited to see her do it.

Said by: Marc at February 27, 2007 10:24 AM

What a disaster! Did Lily Tomlin refer to this horrific opening nightmare in some other event?

I really liked the way Ellen went into the audience and had Stephen Speilberg take a photo of her and Dirty Harry.

Said by: Daryl at February 27, 2007 11:00 AM

Amanda,

Thanks for putting that horrible train wreck of an image in my mind. I had never seen this before, and I can understand why I was shielded from it before now. The only redeeming factors were being able to look at Rob Lowe in his prime and Lily Tomlin hosting.

I think this is a perfect example of what happened to Hollywood during the Reagan-Bush I era when gays were effectively blacklisted. All the creativity was drained, and everybody was romancing the past.

Ok, time to take a shower and smudge myself to clear the negativity...

Said by: David at February 28, 2007 07:56 AM

Amanda,

If memory serves, "Blame Canada" got nominated because there weren't nearly enough original songs that year.

I personally thought that Robin Williams was chosen because he was the one actor everybody could count on to perform the song without having to bleep it.

I think the other reason was to send a message to the studios: give us better songs, or THIS is what will happen.

Just my opinion, given in love. ;-)

Said by: David at February 28, 2007 10:01 PM

Darling David...

The fact the Robin Williams performed the song is bad enough, but the part that pains me is the REASON they had to get someone else to perform the song.

You see, between the release of the South Park movie and the Oscars, Mary Kay Bergman committed suicide.

She was the voice of pretty much every woman and girl on South Park.

http://www.mkbmemorial.com/

So she sang lead, back-up, and more on "Blame Canada."

I thought they might mention something about her when they introduced the song on the Oscars, but no, nothing. I cried for her, and for all the depressed people who feel invisible and hopeless.

Hell, they didn't even have to say what happened to her, but they could have at least mentioned her name.

http://www.mkbmemorial.com/

Robin couldn't even get through the last lines: "The smut we must stop, the trash we must bash, the laughter and fun must all be undone, we must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming us!"
