FOF #487 - Wonder Ronnie - 02.22.07

Podcast
When Ronnie was a little girl,
she convinced her mother to let her get out of doing the housework as long as she was reading- even comic books counted. Naturally, Ronnie became an expert on the pantheon of comic book characters and super-heroes. One of her favorites of course is Wonder Woman.

We're tickled pink to see that Warner Brothers has put the classic 1970s Wonder Woman TV shows (starring Lynda Carter) on iTunes for us to enjoy.

Today we give you the ins and outs of one of our most favorite 70s TV shows which was the paradoxically titled "The New Original Wonder Woman." The pilot episode starred Lynda Carter as the glamazon along with comedic actors Lyle Waggoner, Cloris Leachman, Stella Stevens, Red Buttons and Fannie Flagg. Just like the Love Boat, "Wonder Woman" had a star filled cast with a high-camp sensibility. Even the Nazis were likeable.

Best of all was the theme song. It is true disco genius. Who can't sing it?

Join Miss Ronnie, Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós as we talk about the origins of Wonder Woman, the hilarious 1976 TV Pilot Episode, and lots of current "Wonder Woman" related news.

"What Wonder Woman related news" you say?

This week the Middle Eastern country of Iran announced they would be building an island of women, new transparent transportation devices have been announced and a German artists nude self-portraits taken at a former Nazi concentration camp have caused a scandal in Europe. So, an island of women, an invisible car and Nazis, could this be a rip off of our favorite show? We'll have to wait and see.

Did you notice there was an EVIL Nazi Wonder Woman named Fausta? TRUE!

Also on todays show we follow up with Britney Spears. We really think she just shaved her hair off because she was depressed and wanted to "reboot" her system. So we're offering a short list of Ten Simple Things You Can Do (Besides Shaving Your Hair) to Fight Depression.

Listen to details at the end of the show about our photoshop the Feast of Fools contest. Win a Feast of Fools T-shirt, DVD and other assorted goodies!

My roommate once told me that he learned how to speak English by watching the Wonder Woman series as a kid. He said they spoke really slowly and very clearly on the show, so it was perfect for learning English. Thought that was interesting. I've seen an episode since and he's right.

Good call on Wonder Woman being a Mexican woman. Lynda Carter is half Mexican and half Irish. According to IMDB, her birth name was Linda Jean Cordova Carter.

If memory serves, her Mexican grandmother insisted on spelling her name with a "y" instead of an "i" to honor her Latin heritage.

I didn't know that. Thank you David. You always learn new things on the Feast of Fools!

You may have to change the name to the "Feast of Intellectuals", Fausto! Your listeners are very smart! :)

hey Fausto, my name is Keyvan, not Tehran! I don't know anything about lesbians scare me...but i would imagine there are a couple of lesbians running around in Iran. but there are lotsa gay boys there...and I mean LOTS. everyone has sucked cock at least once, and that's an official survey lol
p.s: pussy stinks!

David beat me to the punch. I heard the show this morning and remembered that Lynda Carter was half Mexican, but didn't get a chance to comment until now. Here's what Wikipedia says: "Carter was born Linda Jean Córdoba Carter in Phoenix, Arizona. Her father, Colby Carter, was a white American, and her mother, Juana Córdoba, was Mexican." !ay dio mio Batman!

Said by: Richard Streetman at February 22, 2007 05:44 PM

Actually Lynda Carter's full name is, according to information gleaned from her birth certificate that is currently on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.:

Lynda Evangelista Cardigan de la Rosario Karen Walker Bush

Not a lot of people know that!

Ay dios mio Batman indeed.

You're welcome, Fausto. I was an obsessed fan of Lynda Carter (and several other female entertainers) when I was growing up.

Also, to follow up on the subject of the show changing from the WWII era to the '70s, IMDB says that it was done when CBS bought the show from ABC, wanting to make a fresh start with the show. This also explained the costume changes.

Sorry I didn't get to read the comments on Lynda Carter before this Fri.AM - I'm sure a little Spanish lesson will in no way lessen your enthusiasm, David, for Lynda Carter. BUT, what's up with the theory that spelling LYnda with a Y is more 'latin' than spelling LInda with an I? As you know, in Spanish, LINDA is a real word (adjective) & means pretty (feminine thing/person). The Y in Spanish is considered a consonant and therefore would never be used between two other consonants (l-n). I am pretty sure that the legend that Lynda's Mexican grandma was wanting her name to be spelled as it is, is inaccurate. In Spanish, Y's in the middle of a word appear ONLY when 3 vowels attempt to appear together and the 'i' (vowel) sound is in the middle. So, as an example, instead of writing 'leiendo' (reading) in Spanish you write 'leYendo'. And another thing - Fausto, you yourself might very well have learned to speak English from watching Wonder Woman too, since you spoke Spanish first. I smile to myself every time I remember you saying, "mami, yo hablo inglés" when you were about 3 years old, and then you would just mouth a bunch of sounds that strangely did sound like English! Tan chulo y simpático even then!

A link for everything you ever wanted to know about Wonder Woman:

Another point of interest, the comic book incarnation of Wonder Woman has had the ability to fly since the mid-80's sans the invisible jet. Most recenty she had fallen out of public favor for killing a man and ultimately disappeared for one year. Diana Prince returned as a government agent mandated to find out Wonder Woman's secret identity. In other words find herself. Ironic, yes?
