Happy Valentines Day! I know it's a bit late, but sometimes heartfelt love just takes a little longer to arrive.
We have got a whole lot of love for you today. Magnetic Fields' onetime band member L.D. Beghtol chats with us about his book "69 Love Songs: A Field Guide," a fully illustrated oral history on the 1999 three-CD album 69 Love Songs.
An odd attraction to the bizarre, the excessive and even the mundane are probably the driving forces behind front-man Stephin Merritt's approach to making music and behind this conceptual album.
Why 69 love songs anyways? Well, because 100 was way too much and 13 was too Jerry Lee Lewis.
An essential for fans of the Magnetic Feilds work or of indie-pop in general, 69 Love Songs captured the inter-genre sensibility and grad-school mentality that their music seems to best represent. The 3-disc album's wide rage of styles and lyrical references becomes a heartfelt collection of quirky pop-culture nuggets.
Music critic and Magnetic Fields band-member L.D. Beghtol's book about the music also titled "69 Love Songs" is a mini-dictionary of the references in the song's lyrics, an index of the band-members' favorite songs and the backstory of other delightful tidbits. It's an essential read for any devotée of "69 Love Songs."
Join us as Gregg Shapiro, Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós talk to L.D. about how they devised the project, the obstacles in putting such a large album together, bad vegetarian food, and spilling the beans on Stephin Merritt.

The car that Marc referenced is most likely the Trabant, or Trabi...I rode in one in Berlin way back in 1990!

That's the car. It doesn't say it in the wikipedia but the car I was in had a wooden steering wheel. It looked like something that would have steered a child's toy.

Excellent interview, guys. And Gregg was so adorable fawning all over LD. He was like a little kid meeting his hero, I loved it.
LD talking about Stephen's reading his manuscript reminded me of the time back in the 90's when Stevie Nicks was asked if she had read Mick Fleetwood's biography (at a time when they weren't speaking) and she said, "No, because I lived it... and if I would have read it I would have been there with a red pen going 'spelled wrong' and 'big lie' and 'never happened'... so no, I didn't read it". That always made me giggle.

Fausto & Marc - great interview guys. I almost died laughing when LD listed off his album titles: str8; bottom; hung. Too f***ing funny. Good thing there weren't any cars around me or I probably would've wrecked. Rear-ended....Anyway funny, fabulous interview. Even if LD seemed a little impressed with himself ;-)

Why don't any of these people ever look the way they sound to me !! I had LD looking like David Hyde Pierce from Fraiser. What's up with that ??? Except Marc.........I had him pegged for completely hot the second I heard his voice.

Never have I heard a better more involved fan than gregg shapiro. I always love to hear gregg on the show but when he's excited about the subject...all bets are off. There is no measurement for how cute he is.
