FOF #480 - The Unsinkable Paula Poundstone - 02.13.07

Podcast
When every single aspect of your life
gets scrutinized by the media and the law, the pressure can be intense. It is even more so when you are an unconventional woman with mainstream appeal.

When Paula Poundstone was arrested in 2001 for drunk driving and child endangerment, she temporarily lost custody of her adopted children, went into a deep depression and was forced by the courts to go to Alcoholics Anonymous on national TV.

Not one to brush anything under the carpet, Paula Poundstone took her personal and legal struggles that she endured under the glare of the media and put it to work in her courageous stand-up act.

Today, the unsinkable Paula Poundstone lives happily in her home in Southern California with her three kids, eleven cats, two rabbits, two tadpoles, a lizard and one big dog.

In her new book "There's Nothing in This Book I Meant To Say" Poundstone shares her experiences contrasted with zesty biographies of Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln and Ludwig van Beethoven, to name a few.

Join us as we talk about the U.S. legal system, being a single parent, the legacy of Robin Williams, asexuality, and what celebrity would Paula Poundstone date if they asked.

You have the right to remain fabulous on the Feast of Fools!

OK as you can see, I stayed up extra special late to listen to this, because my iTunes downloaded it PROMPTLY and I've been eagerly anticipating it. And needless to say, I was not disappointed! Paula is a dream and your interview was insightful and interesting. I, too, have been following Paula's career since the early 80's. I remember seeing her on an HBO special called "Women of the Night" featuring Paula, Ellen Degeneres, Judy Tenuta and Rita Rudner. I have that special on VHS I liked it so much. I even have a special promotional Pop Tarts video of Paula espousing her love of the breakfast treat. (of course I knew what her "favorite food" answer would be!) So yeah, I'm a fan. And I am so glad she's looking her demons right in the eye and continuing with her fabulous self.

Congrats on the great interview, guys! Keep 'em coming! I vote for more!

WOW! Great episode today. I love Paula! Too bad she didn't talk about Wait, Wait Don't Tell me NPR Show.

Fasuto, you did a great job interviewing her! LOVE THIS SHOW!

Said by: Mike Hunt at February 13, 2007 07:47 AM

Nice! This is a definite keeper.

Said by: Jason Smith at February 13, 2007 07:59 AM

Thanks guys for asking Paula Poundstone the question about Hillary Clinton.

I'm so upset though that you didn't use my entire screen name. You only said Marguerite. It's Marguerite Tarde (Margue Retarde). It's my fabulous drag name.

I was going to buy a T-shirt, but now I'm too upset.

Said by: Marguerite Tarde at February 13, 2007 10:24 AM

Great drag name Gary. But are you REALLY bringing sexy back, or just trying desperately to keep it?

Said by: Fausto at February 13, 2007 11:56 AM

I just came up with my Spanish Drag name. It's Maya Inez. You have to say it fast three times. It sounds like Mayonnaise.

Loved Paula. She always been one of my favorite comedians. I have to say I was a little star struck. To hear that familiar voice over the phone was incredible.

We forgot to try and fanangle some tickets from her publicist to see the show. Paula, if you read this, hook a brother up.

Said by: Marc at February 13, 2007 02:14 PM

Well, we all have problems, right? And the thing is to beat them, as she did.

Bring Amanda Steinstein againg!
And Marsian!

You guys rock! What an excellent show. You did such a great job interviewing her and she was a total delight. I'm glad you went right into the punch, not to mention kept the breakdown flowing. I imagine withe someone as witty as Paula Poundstone you'd have a hard time staying on track.

Love love love, and then some,
Puppy D

pup don mentioned the breakdown and i would like to elaborate. Did no one notice that the questions changed? I like it though, mix it up a little, they were good questions guys!

Said by: Mike from Bolingbrook at February 13, 2007 07:57 PM

Yep, the questions changed for 2007. What do think of soem of the new ones. We think we are going top change the last question though: "What happens when we di?" is a little intense for the ending.

Said by: Marc at February 13, 2007 08:23 PM

What a great interview guys!

I was fortunate enough to have met Paula about 5 years ago when she did a show here in LA (Orange County actually). She is a fantastic person to be around and her live shows are hilarious!

This one ranks up there with your interviews with Margaret Cho & Kathy Griffin!

Good job!
Keep warm and I'll see if pup Don and I can mail you a snow shovel with a hot guy to do the work....

Well, guys, that was a great show. I've wondered about Ms. Poundstone being a lesbian before. She seems like one. But I actually believed her (why shouldn't I?) when she said she was just asexual.

I've been listening for so long (since Marc was just a faraway voice in the background) that I never really thought about commenting or anything.

But since you guys entered my dreams the other night, I thought "what the hell?" What did I dream? Well, that's kind of strange. You were both reincarnated daughters of Boadicea (ancient celtic warrior queen), who you were also trying to raise from the dead. Poor Sal-E was the one whose body you were planning to put her soul into. Like I said. Weird.

Anyway, thanks for my daily dose of gay. Keep up the great work guys!

Guys, first let me say what a great show FOF has become. Not that is was ever not great, like a good wine, it ages even better. The Paula Poundstone show was amazing but herein lies the rub. While the show and interview were one of the most concise and professionally done of ANY of the interview shows, for me at least it seemed to lack that wonderful spontaneity that was present in say the Kathy Griffin interview.
It seemed that Fausto was kind of using kid gloves and not doing his usual issue pushing. Anyway, opinions are like a_ _ holes …. I still think you are the best reason to wake up in the morning. HAPPY VD Day

Said by: Eric at February 14, 2007 02:50 AM

Oh yes, the ¿? great! I like that you ask, 'what happens when you die?' And yea for Paula and yea for Fausto and Marc for being on FOF! Fausto might have been a little cheekier with Paula had he been sitting next to her in a car so he could be invited to check if her boobs were real, as in the KG show. This time I think the body part would have been a bit lower... Paula could name her new standup show "The Quiet, Diet-Pepsi- guzzling Vagina Monologue".

Said by: Patricia Fernós at February 14, 2007 10:06 AM

So what did you have for breakfast?

COUGH! COUGH! COUGH

......a cigarette??

Said by: Manny at February 14, 2007 06:28 PM

Really great interview -- we're going to see Paula tonight in Crystal Lake, so it was great to hear your pre-show interview with her. And hey, congrats to her for being on your show! I tend to agree w/the lesbian speculation posted earlier, but that's just one dyke's opinion. And, unfortunately, she probably feels like she has to be so careful (or self-oppressed?) because of her kids. Which sucks. Anyhoo, thanks for another great show!

Said by: Paula (a different one!) at February 15, 2007 03:30 PM

When we were in college Marc was always trying something new. He was very fond of milk, and tried some from different speices. I had a guinia pig that had babies once, he tried her milk, then there was the cat, and somebody's cocker spaniel. Just ask him about it. Oh, and there was the time he tried to get me to eat Brie. Yuck!

Said by: Solitaire Miles at February 17, 2007 12:54 AM

She lied. Her favorite food is Poontang!

Said by: Miss Understood at February 17, 2007 12:40 PM

Thanks for having Paula on the show. I love her on NPR, and to hear her elaborate about her life in ways that would not be as appropriate on public radio was wonderful. Keep up the good work! Fausto, tu español me vuelve loco! Muah! Love you guys! Marc, did you really rub your wee wee on Howard Stern's doorknob? You are THE MAN baby!
