FOF #469 - Research on Microfilm - 01.29.07

Electronica, techno, synth pop, whatever you want to call it, Microfilm has got it. And now they have a new album to prove it.
Microfilm is a partnership between real-life partners Matthew Mercer and Matt Keppel. They wanted to merge an early 80s synthpop and disco ethos with a more modern electro and tech-house sound. The end result is a 10-track debut album titled "After Dark."
We discovered Microfilm when they got named by Time Out Chicago's "Queers of the Year" along side yours truly Fausto Fernós and my beloved Marc Felion. We figured they must be fabulous to make the list so we just had to have them on the show.
On today's show we talk about what it is like to work on a project as a couple, which drugs people take while partying at clubs and just exactly how you get those crazy sounds in electronic music.
Marc also implores the listeners to stop sending us links to "God Hates a Fag" video from Donnie Davies, an ex-gay minister. We have been inudated by them. We poll the audience as to whether it is a hoax or parody or if it is for real. Listen to find out what people are saying and which out gay music stars think this guy is for real.
Do you think Donnie Davies is for real or not?
It comes with a great grape taste- Feast of Fools!

Hey you guys! I just finished listening to the new episode, I believe I'm the first one to, yey!
So I'm from mexico, not many fans down here, right?
we have this amazing band in mexico called Austin Tv, it's basically electric guitars and a little bit of keyboard, anyway, they also are known for playing famous lines from movies during their songs, kind of like Microfilm, I love that!
Ay Dios mío! I can't stop saying that now! All the time
anyway, great show, love you guys!
Ay Dios mío, el puñado de locos, el mejor podcast gay!

"Berlin is small but nice." Ay dios mios! Germans are so proud about their "cosmopolitan" capitol, I am sure some will not like your guest`s comment Berlin lol (Just kidding)
Btw Oscar Wilde might have lost his creativity after his time in prison but he definetly stayed on the pink side of life (and even tried to hook up again with his previous lover Bosy).

Donnie Davies is definitely dazed and confused and most probably for real. He reminds me of that born-again minister, also from the South, who railed against 'evil' (read 'sex') and eventually got caught with prostitutes. Remember, Marc, that for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction; take those 'invitations' to de-fag as an underhanded compliment to the success of FOF - this is what happens when you become famous...

I'm not sure what to make of Donny Davies, but I found this website: http://www.thestranger.com/blog/2007/01/donnie_davies_unmasked_no_really
I'd have to agree with Marc, this all seems a bit over the top. PLUS he has Cyndi Lauper listed as a "safe" band. C'mon!

Okay, sorry to post again, but Donnie Davies isn't real, his name is Joey Oglesby and is a comedian. Here's all the proof.

Marc was right! Donnie Davies turns out to be a farce after all... now if HE'S a joke, is the Westboro Baptist Church and pastor Fred Phelps also a put-on?
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
-President George W. Bush, 2002.

Thanks, Ben Hill, for your keen investigative work. You confirmed what I suspected: the guy is a hoax. As I watched the video, I thought it had a bit of a "Landover Baptist Church" (http://www.landoverbaptist.org/) ring to it. I'm not amused...

Unfortunately, Phelps is for real. He has had a looooooong history of abusive behavior, starting with domestic violence, and at some point beginning to direct his wrath toward gays.
Said by: David at January 29, 2007 11:08 AM
Sorry to send you guys the video, I didn't realize you were being inundated with this video, although I guess I should have expected it.
I have to say I thought it was real, but I guess I underestimated the time and energy someone would put into a hoax. Well at least it IS a hoax and I guess that's a good thing.
It's funny that the earlier post mentioned the ridiculousness of having Cyndi Lauper in the "safe" music. I even went so far as to email "Donnie" to tell him to stop besmirching dear Cyndi's name :) Oh well, maybe I will learn to be less naieve yet.

I've contacted Donnie's publicity dept for an interview. We'll see if he comes on!
Said by: Marc at January 29, 2007 01:21 PM
And I am very glad that people sent us the video. We wouldn't have found it without you guys. Thank you! The call out to stop sending is more meant for the people that will be sending it to us three months from now. If you ever have a hot scoop, please do not hesitate to send it to us.

Did you see how who is backers are: http://lovegodsway.org. Poor Jesus is probably turning over in his grave as we speak.
This LoveGodsWay has a list of gay bands (http://lovegodsway.org/GayBands) -- some we would have figured, some are surprises but what's this?
"George Michael (texan)"
OK, I know George is gay but what about this "(texan)" part. Is it "worse" to be from Texas and gay?
I guess I just don't know much.
Said by: Mike (DMCEx) at January 29, 2007 01:41 PM
doing an interview with that guy would be AWESOME!
Said by: Ben H at January 29, 2007 01:43 PM
I was driving home from school listening to your show when I hear you were taking aswers off messanger. I thought to myself for a whole 5 minutes. "Wow, I have a great answer for this, I better get home." I was thinking about it and then I remembered that these are not live shows. I am such an idiot some times.
Said by: Jonathan at January 29, 2007 01:51 PM
The more I listen to it, the more I think the guy in the video isn't even singing the song. The voice sounds like a young twink. The guy in the video looks like he should have a more "operatic" voice.
Said by: Marc at January 29, 2007 01:54 PM
A few clicks and we find that Donnie Davis is really Joel Oglesby. But really...how funny was that whole set up! The headline quote on his website (lovegodsway.org) was from Oscar Wilde! DUH!
Joel Oglesby's Website

Sorry for double post, but it didn't tell me HTML was disabled, so copy the following link into your browser to reveal Donnie Davis' true identity: http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2007/01/davies-exposed-as-actor-joel-oglesby.html

Ok well I guess it has been proven that Davies was a hoax. But if it hadnt I would have DEFINATELY thought it was for real. Mark said that it couldnt be real because he was smiling to much and it was over the top. Belive me, there alot of hate groups out there that say they hate you and that you should die, all with a smile as the hate spills out of their mouths. There is a 2 young sister group for the KKK and they sing hate songs all with a smile.
But the most hilarious thing about Davies was that if he WAS an ex Gay then why the hell would he care about what people are saying about his weight. NO straight man really cares about his weight only a true gay man would. I though that was HILARIOUS how upset he was about it!! LOL.

What can I say? Happy Birthday guys! Two years of greatness and here's a special video made for you at the FOF.

I recorded the song especailly for Fausto (knowing he's a Dreamgirl at heart). You can embed it on the site if you like - I tried to get in all the info about how to download the show etc, hope you think it's ok. I chose my fave pics from the site (for the slideshow...the credits at the beginning).
Love you all, gary c, UK

Hey guys, thanks for having us on the show -- it was fun. Hope you enjoy the music!
Said by: Microfilm at January 29, 2007 08:29 PM
Donnie is clearly a gag...just do a google search on his name and the ONLY time this guy ever shows up is in relation to this video. If he was a well-known youth pastor he'd be online for other things.
That, and the lyrics are absurd...and the guy is running around in a pink shirt that's parly unbuttoned...come on, this is a huge joke!
Said by: adam at January 29, 2007 10:19 PM
One other thing to note...that website of his is really just one page generated with text. You could put a site like that together in a couple hours...it really isn't that big a deal.
Said by: adam at January 29, 2007 10:28 PM
All I have to say is if you look at the video on Donnie's website and look at the source code for the embedded video it says the following "...topic=videos_comedy..." so that's a dead giveaway to me, I could care less who the douchebag is.

What is it with electronica bands using library stuff for their names? One of my favorite discoveries when I was doing college radio was an electronica band called Books On Tape. I have a vague notion that I ran across another library-themed electronica band at some point, but the name escapes me. And then there is the now-defunct California punk band, The Librarians. I still have their bumpersticker on my car.
