FOFA #85 - The Power of Glitter - 11.24.06

Way ahead of his time, George Harris Jr. better known as Hibiscus was in the forefront of the gay liberation movement and a pioneer in theater as well. Today we repost an interview with director and documentary filmmaker David Weissman about his film concerning the Cockettes.

Today's show features an interview with David Weissman, co-director and producer of the feature-length documentary "Cockettes." We talked about the famous hippie drag queens from the 60's and 70's, like Hibiscus, who changed the world with their outlandish shows and forever made glitter a permanent make-up tool for any serious diva.
Here at the Feast of Fools, we salute those brave folks who dared to be outrageously fabulous! We consider Hibiscus not just a sort of queer ancestor, but a forerunner in many ways to what we do today on the Feast of Fools podcast.
You have to fight, for your right, to be fabulous! Get your ammo by listening to the Feast of Fools.

Great podcast today! I loved this one, I always smoke a joint before bed while listening to the feast, not for medicinal uses though. I followed the wiki link on the site and found out about Gippies... Gay Hippies... I have never heard of that before.. patchouli and glitter? Que Sexy!

I'm waiting for my coffee to run over my nipples! DAMNIT this brand stinks! Enjoyed the interview, thanks for introducing me to more facts about gay history.
BTW while watching Madonna the other night I thought of Marc....when will her book come out, "My Daughter a Cunt."

Loved the show. It was interesting to hear the more raw, slightly less polished way the show sounded then. Not unlike going back and watching the first season of a favorite show and seeing the earlier stages of the show's evolution.
The interview was also interesting, as I had never heard of the Cockettes.
You've definitely pulled some great ones out of the archives this week, and I will be looking forward to the shows with Patricia (and maybe Jim Verraros?) next week.
