FOF #437 - Licking the Frosting - 12.01.06

Podcast
If you didn't help to cook the meal, you don't get to eat.
Those harsh words echo the sentiment Marc Felion, myself and a lot of other openly gay media types share when it comes to our closeted counterparts.

We made a personal sacrifice by coming out, but we have also benefited. By coming out early in our careers we have seen the positive impact it's had on our personal lives and our communities.

And then there are closeted gay people who despite the money, despite the power and comfort refuse to come out. Why?

We sympathize with the fear they have. We understand that their careers will be changed by sharing this very personal matter with the world, but they don't get to reap the benefits of those who have made the sacrifice to come out. They do not get to put pictures of themselves online to solicit sex. They do not get to send sexy emails to high school lacrosse players. There is no having one's cake and eating it too without the contempt and retribution of the media.

Now, we are not saying we at the Feast of Fools would out someone, but we would certainly report someone outing somebody else. So, for example, if we had sex with say someone like sexy Jake Gyllenhall, we would not out him. But, if he had sex with someone else and then they outed him. Well, there would be hell to pay! We'd never forgive him.

Marc came up with a good metaphor- "If you didn't help cook the meal, you don't get to eat." We also propose that many closeted gay men lack the full range of experience, emotion and sexual fulfillment out there because of their hidden status. They become stuck in a less mature mode of operation and by coming out they can become who they truly need to be.

Listen to today as Miss Ronnie, Marc Felion and Fausto Fernós (thats me) talk about funky flavored sodas, why Swedes trust IKEA more than the church, and why some pop stars should never bother with the whole celebrity game.

Happy World AIDS Day everyone! Today we give thanks to all our friends living with HIV/AIDS who are still here to talk about it, the the progress made with health care and treatment and the way this terrible disease forced America to come face to face with its homophobia.

At the same time we remeber those who are no longer with us and the long road ahead to overcoming this terrible disease. The Feast of Fools wish you a very blessed World AIDS Day and hope that this year will be the last.

Said by: JimmyDe at December 1, 2006 03:56 AM

Marc, you are just too damned sexy in that pose! You are bringing together two fantasies of mine, a sexy man in a wifebeater and a man who can cook worth a damn.

*Sigh* Call me if Fausto ever decides that he is not good enough for you. (just kidding Fausto!)

Said by: Josh at December 1, 2006 04:54 AM

Marc does look hot! Very Stanley Kowalski-like. Made me think of placing all of the Feast of Fools cast into different television shows...Fausto's Anatomy...Amanda Steinstein Knows Best...Leave It To Ronnie...Desperate Podcasters...I Love Fausto...Absolutely Felion...The Gay Team...Gaywatch...Ronnie The Vampire Slayer...The possibilities are endless for fantasy casting.

See what happens when you stay home from work with a fever?

Got my t-shirt and dvd earlier this week. Thanks, guys.

Yahoo, Vmar lives on! Welcome to Florida. I am in St. Petersburg. Bet you are glad to be missing the impending snow storm in Chicago!

Said by: Mike Hunt at December 1, 2006 06:54 AM

Ronnie's deadpan delivery of, "Mine." cracked me up every time.

Fausto usually has his facts straight, and I'm no Rosie expert, but she did come out while she was doing her show; I think during the last few months, to bring attention to a situation in Florida concerning gay couples adopting children or being foster parents. And, I'm pretty sure Rosie has said that Isaac Mizrahi gave her that Helen Terry circa 1985 haircut himself.

Happy Friday. Can't believe it's December already.

Great show!

My parents taped that Diana Ross Wizard of Oz thing on vcr during my formative years when I was at home sick a lot. Watched it quite a few times. And they STILL had the gall to be surprised when I grew up all gay.
Speaking of being sick - getting my toncils scratched out of my throat on monday. Taking your podcasts with me to drag me through the first painful night. Thx in advance for the comic relief!
ps: where's that FOF-cast commentary track for Showgirls? :-))

Said by: Steven (Amsterdam) at December 1, 2006 10:33 AM

Ohmy Marc... if only you liked girls....*sighs*....

Said by: meshaped at December 1, 2006 10:52 AM

You were right nick, although she did come out just months before the show went off the air, and two years after she split up with her magazine (according to her wikipedia entry).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_O%27Donnell

Rosie came out after she had a good run of her TV show. She could have gone on longer, or even tried to see how long she could continue doing the talk show as an out lesbian, but instead she chose to take time off and relfect on her purpose in life, and write a LOT of bad poetry on her blog.

I totally respect that and think she did the right thing.

I think Rosie is awesome and a role model for many people. I just wish we lived in a world that would allow an openly lesbian talk show host to have a successful daytime TV talk show.

Oh wait, there are two- Ellen and Rosie, now on the View. Kudos to Barbara Walters for having the courage and vision to hire her, despite her controversial views and her candidness with her lesbianism.

How about giving Lea Delaria her own show? She's always been out, proud, hilarious and successful. There are thousands of great gay entertainers, newsmakers out there already working hard every day. Let's not forget about them as well.

It's soooooo great to hear everyone again now that I'm back from London!

Trip was great and so were the men!

It was a welcome site to have my new FOF red shirt in the mail too! Thanks for postin my pix in it! I'll be putting it to good use (or evil, if you swing that way)...

Love-n-kink,
Buzz

*** Oh! By the way Marc, that pic is SEXY HOT! Lick it up and catch that drip because everything is good to the last drop!

WOOOOOOF!

Said by: Buzz at December 1, 2006 12:15 PM

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Glad you like the photo.

Its good to see Vmarr active on the messgage board again. Hope you make a full recovery honey. If doing drag helps I'm all for it, but you just make sure you're taking care of yourself first.

Until you get the wig try using a towel wrapped around your head. Think 1940's movie star or little boy starting out in drag.

All My Best,
Marc

It makes me so sad that Miss Ronnie doesn't say her famous quote anymore :( It makes my life better! Please keep saying your final finish at the end of the shows Miss Ronnie. :)

I shudder at the thought of VaJayJay soda !!!!

Said by: Destroyer of Worlds at December 3, 2006 09:15 AM

I used to be angry with the fact that many actors and musicians refuse to come out for the sake of their careers. But then I started to wonder—should I be angry with them, or should I instead be angry with all the closeted executives, producers, casting directors, etc in Hollywood who maintain this sense of fear? If these older gays in positions of power were actually brave enough to come out and stop being so self-loathing, then all the gay actors and musicians wouldn't need to hide who they are to protect their careers.

I'm sure within 20 to 30 years, when the old Hollywood executive regime retires and/or dies out, they'll be replaced by out & proud individuals who won't be so afraid to embrace their community, and Hollywood will be far more gay-friendly.

Said by: Mike Puskas at December 3, 2006 12:18 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention—when Miss Ronnie talked about being freaked out by being buried at sea & Fausto asked "What if they're still alive?"... my grandfather was badly wounded during WWII and the doctors thought he was dead. He was put in a casket aboard the ship he was on, and literally seconds before he was about to be buried at sea, someone heard a very faint noise coming from inside the casket. They opened it up, realized he was still breathing, and got him out. Freaky shit! If they had buried him at sea, I wouldn't even be here right now!

Said by: Mike Puskas at December 3, 2006 12:24 PM

Thats an amazing story Mike!

Said by: Fausto at December 3, 2006 06:58 PM

Great show! On the issue of outing... Studies show that knowledge of homosexuality does not decrease homophobia. Knowing someone who is gay does decrease homophobia. These same studies showed that fear of HIV/AIDS was only decreased by knowing someone positive... Being out is the best weapon we have against hatred. I don't think Kelly Ripa would have talked to Clay like that if she didn't perceive him as weak... Coming out when you are ready is fine for normal folks, but for those who benefit by being in the closet, they are benefiting at the detriment of all of us. Yes, being out and famous is hard. Boo-hoo. Maybe if more celebs fought back it would be less of a problem.

Fausto,

I'll cast another vote in favor of Lea Delaria having her own talk show. Your interview with her on an earlier episode was a great one, and it showcased her personality well.
