FOF #425 - Feet to the Fire - 11.09.06

So we whooped ass, now what? Marc and I sat at the Howard Brown Annual Gala last week as Gov. Blagojevich promised the good people of Illinois UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE if he got re-elected. And he's been re-elected. So today begins the clock towards Universal Health Care in Illinois. Day #1 without Universal Health Care. Lets see what happens.
Our therapist friend Jeff Stahl joins us to talk about the ramifications of putting former dictator Saddam Hussein to death for war crimes, Rumsfeld's resignation, heterosexual icons for gays and the nature of political equilibrium.
Pictured above is now ousted violently anti-gay Senator Rick Santorum weeping for losing the election to a almost equally conservative Democrat. [Thanks to Aaron Cockroft for telling us about the photo!] Makes you happy to see this image, doesn't it?
The euphoria of an intoxicating drink without the hangover- the Feast of Fools.

Is Rick Santorum's daughter upset her dad lost the election, or the fact he's bought her that Carol Channing ventriloquist doll?
Said by: kilo hotel at November 9, 2006 05:04 AM
Rasher, according to the dictionary, is a slice (of bacon, I presume)...
Does anyone else besides me see the close resemblence between the Santorum family picture and Harry Potter's mean relatives, especially the 3 children?

I think it is creepy that the doll is wearing the same dress as the unattractive little girl.

One would think the doll had better taste.

I gotta say, seeing this picture really made my day. I think I may print it and staple it to my cubicle wall at work. As you guys may know, Dan Savage has coined the word "Santorum" as "the frothy mixture of lubricant and fecal matter that is sometimes the result of anal sex". So when I found out he lost I turned to my partner and was like, "Santorum has been wiped away!"

Ok, im just going to put it out there, NOW you are doing it on purpose. Although it did make me chuckle to the extent that you were taking it, especially knowing that other people would probably be like, ok why do they keep saying that, and me knowing why.
OH it was SUPER CUTE when Mark said it. I was like...wow that sounded hot..lol.
Anyway, about the military and what was said about the people who generally sing up to be in the military. Well a few years ago, when the former xbox, not the new one but the one b4 the new one came out. I was at a mall and they had a navy or army kiosk and there selling point was, "sign up now and get a free xbox". Lets just put it out there, I was DISQUSTED. Can you image at the hype of the xbox and young people who are easily influinced by just the possibility of getting the game system and not really knowing what they are really signing up for.
In fact, im just putting it out there, I have a friend who recently signed up for the military. And they say that the military is upset with what was said about them. But my friend, admits to signing up with the army because he does not have the MONEY or the GRADES to go to college and sees that as his only option.
Regardless of how people feel about Kerrys botched joke, its a fact, regardless if people in the military want to admit it or not. MOST not all, but most of the people in the military consist of people who had no other options but to go there. OR even more sadly, people who were brought in by ridiculous sign up ploys as "get a free xbox"..ugh!
P.S. Fausto I owe you about 3 bucks...lol.

Oh man!! That pic is THE BEST! (so is the doll) After listening to all the talk about the military, it reminds of Judy Benjamin. Poor Private Benjamin was promised private condos and Club Med scenes to join the army. We know what she got: barracks and toilets she had to clean with her electric toothbrush, Captain Lewis, etc. Now, all of the armed services commercials look like sports adventure vacations and/or free education for whatever you want to study. FAT CHANCE! But first, please risk life and limb so that we millionaires can make a little more money!
Sorry for the stream of consiousness rant-
Love the shows guys!

Thanks for the shout-out guys. I've had a crappy few days and you just put a huge smile on my face. We are all very happy here about the election results. Especially considering the Republicans are tying to do everything they can to get rid of porn, this vote means that a little of the heat should be off of us for a while.
Having a cocktail and making a toast for you. Have a great day. :)
Love,

FYI: Rashers are bacon, not sausage. It's a British thing. No idea why they're calling it a rasher in Arizona.

Gotta jump in Janet and tell you that you are WAY wrong. The military is NOT mostly people who opted to join for lack of any other option in life. I work for the DoD and deal with military personel on a daily basis. Are there idiots? Sure. I would hazard a guess that you deal with plenty of idiots in the civilian world. MOST of these men and women are intelligent people who have decided to give up their normal lives of family and support systems to help everyone...not just Americans to have a better life. They did not do this for political reasons. They did this for moral reasons. They belive they are doing the noble thing and I support them for that. I don't always agree with them...in fact, have daily rants about how things could be better...but to sit back in the comfort of your home...where you are safe BECAUSE these young men and women have given up their average existance is not right.
I do not believe that it was John Kerry's intent to insult the men and women of the military, but to have people say that it is true is just WRONG. These are not people who make governmental policy. They are doing a job...just like the rest of America. I don't support the Republican policies...but I do support the troops. It is easy to criticize them when you don't work with them. I work with their children on a daily basis and KNOW that they are just like every other American family who hopes for better for their children. Give them credit for a bit more intelligence than joining up to serve their country than that they will recieve an xbox.

Jeff adds another refreshingly pragmatic and intelligent "voice" to the cast, thank you again for having him on.

Jeff made a really good point when he said that people are adverse to change. I do believe there are a lot of people out there who logically would like to give Gays equal rights but they have to re-arrange their mental houses to do so. And logically, that shouldn't be a very big feat but for humans, it is.
As a straight person who is (or would like to think is) very supportive of equal rights and treatment for Gays as well as giving them recognition for the things they do exceptionally well (case in point Sal-E's make-up at the big party a few months ago -- I think straight guys are genetically incapable of that), I still find myself wrestling with issues that all stem from my having to change the way I think due to being brought up in a straight-centric world. For example, Fausto once asked me on the phone, "what if your son announced that he was gay?" My immediate logical thought was, "of course I would support him", but admittedly Fausto's challenge forced me to think in more detail about the issue and admittedly there was more to it than just saying I'd be supportive. I believe it was a good exercise and I believe I came to the same eventual conclusion but indeed, there was some change with which I had to deal. And, I'm a person who is supportive of the Gay's equality to the point that the last thing Marc said to me at the Expo was, "Let me know when you come out".
To that end -- people accepting change -- I believe that Gays continuing to do good work (like the Feast of Fools) is a way to nurture that change. Show the unaware that the gays are not some kind of alien beasts with which we are forced to contend, rather productive and talented people who want what everyone else wants which basically boils down to love and recognition back for the love and deeds they put out.
