FOF #419 - Tricks, Treats and Trannies - 10.31.06

Podcast
How would you feel if your parents dressed you up as Aunt Jemima?
Now how would you feel if you were a six year old BOY and your parents dressed you up as that? Granted, it was the 1950s, but making your son cross-dress in a minstrel-styled breakfast themed outfit is a bit too much.

We have to take his word for it that it was his parents idea but I have a sneaking suspition that it may have been his only means of cross-dressing in that era. Yes, six year olds do like to cross dress. We saw it on 60 Minutes.

On today's spooky podcast, Fausto and I talk about Aunt Jemima, racism and corporate logos and embrassaing Halloween costumes.

We also have some on location interviews with the Trannies at Trannyshack in at the premier club Too2Much in London. Listen as I talk with Glendora about her life in drag, riding poles and the English fascination with sploshing.

Say tuned for some more of the girl's from Tranny shack later this week, including an American girl, Suppositori Spelling who is living large in the UK and Dusty "O" a collegue of Boy George who has dirt to dish and some explaining to do about how they stole Trannyshack from an American Drag Queen.

Listen as my wonderful host Wayne, a Canadian living in London, takes us on a soundseeing tour of the infamous Jack the Ripper's hunting grounds. Listen to creepy slums of London as we encounter rats and zombies(tourists) in their quest to find the legacy of Jack the Ripper.

here's to hoping that people voted for Feast of Fools!

Said by: Jau at October 31, 2006 04:54 AM

It says there that "Public Voting will open on 29th October 2006." I wonder what's the hold up.

Marc, your interview is a hoot! Oh my god, my mom would kill me for saying this, but listening to those English trannies really makes me miss my scottish grandmother. There's something so comforting about a british accent, no matter what the flavor...

whether trannies or grannies, you've gotta love it.

Ok well I feel I should talk a little bit about the name "Tranny Shack" and the people from San Francisco who came up with it and got ripped off by the English trannies. It seems that the original creators of the name are my boyfriend's aunt's tenants in SF. Their names are Michael Johnstone and David Falk. As funny as the British trannies were, I can't help but wonder how much it would suck to come up with a good name only to have it be stolen! Of course, these *are* drag queens and they are famous for stealing stuff...oh well. I just find it strange that I'd somehow have a connection to these folks who are tenants of Vallie Brown, who is aunt of my boyfriend Elliot Cruz, who is the lover of me, Alejandro Gallegos of San Antonio, Tx who never once thought he'd somehow be connected a Feast of Fools podcast involving English accents and candy apple martinis.

That Aunt Jemima costume is pretty bad. Although one Halloween when I was a kid I dressed as a Mexican, I wore a huge sombrero and a pancho. Several people laughed at me saying they had never seen a red headed Mexican before.
This year I was Eddie Munster. I sprayed my hair black.

Are you sure the Trannyshack name was stolen? Suppositori Spelling has been part of Trannyshack in SF for several years now and even won Miss Trannyshack a couple year back. Most of teh Trannyshack regularly headed to the UK earlier this year and apparently left Suppositori behind. I think the UK queens have Heklina's blessing to use the Trannyshack name (but don't quote me on it). I'll be attending Miss Trannyshack 2006 next month, anyway. Fausto, you'd love it. Look it up on Wikipedia.

Also, thanks for that martini recipe. I am totally making them tonight!

I seriously doubt the SF Trannyshack girls would care that the London girls appropriated their name for their club. Trannyshack is all about appropriation, the sicker the funnier, the better. When you have weekly themes and co-hosts like Pippy Lovestocking being presented with new replacement toilet seats due to her black out diarrhea sessions brand infringement seems like a non issue.

BTW Fausto and Mark this show was really really good tonite! I cannot wait for more Tranny tales.

Loved the bit about "sploshing" when Glendora went off on a tangent about a Brut tv advert from the seventies. The adverts starred the gnarly English boxer Henry Cooper and his catchphrase was "Splash it all over your body".

How random!

The Trannyshack name was indeed stolen from San Fran. This is fact. We have more interviews coming up this week that will tell all. Please stay tuned. these girls really are a bit nuts and you will enjoy them.

Hey guys....glad that Marc had a fun time while over in London....Has he mentioned yet that I dragged him down a dark laneway across fields and bushes to the gates of the Queens house....and she was in! Looking back, we really should have rung that doorbell......

Big Kisses to you guys

Wayne

Can y'all post the candy apple drink mark made?

Thanks

OMG, you guys are just so awesome. I loved this show! One word on Jack The Ripper. There's a great sci-fi series of books called the Riverworld series by Phillip Jose Farmer that involves every person who's lived and died on the earth being resurrected on the banks of this giant river. And in the last book in the series this character goes through the super computer to find out who Jack The Ripper was. I honestly don't know if the information given was all speculation or it was taken from factual information, but they found it was actually a group of people who were working together so the work could be done but the tracks would be carefully hidden. Very cool stuff.

A couple FYI's slaves were often given the title "Uncle", "Mamie" or "Aunt" as a term of familiarity by their owners. Its kind of on par with a white person calling a black man "boy." Also, minstrel performers used cork dosused in rubbing alcohol and burned to create thier blackface make-up...
I can't wait to hear more of Marc's trip!
