FOF #387 - Set Your iPod on Fun - 09.13.06

"Mom, I'm NOT going to the Star Trek 40th anniversary convention." That's probably what the teenage son was thinking when his mother sewed up costumes for the whole family and took them to the suburbs of Chicago to parade around for strangers to take their picture.
I would be the young girl on the bottom pointing the phaser gun at the camera.
On today's show we're talking to several die-hard star trek fans about their obsession with their favorite film and TV series, why they chose the costumes they wore, and why are they so into it all.
This year the groundbreaking science fiction TV show Star Trek turns 40, and to celebrate they are organizing conferences where the fans can mingle with the actors from the show, show up in costume and relish moments from the program.
But before all that, today's show begins with a nice refreshing gayed up version of the traditional Mojito recipe- the Gay Mojito or "Faustito."

Marc, if you ARE going to make it to Harrod's this trip, you should go and see the seriously tacky Dodi/Diana memorial Mohamed al Fayed has set up in the basement! I was somewhat surprised when I moved here to find that no one (under 40) is nearly as interested in the royal family as Americans are. Don't worry, Fausto, you can poke fun if you want. Everyone has taken the piss for years about the ridiculous Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park. I have to use that abhorent word 'republican' to describe my stance--I don't believe the UK should continue to be a monarchy, though it does keep the tourists coming.

I know what you mean Sarah- I also think everyone would be better off without royalty anywhere (those things belong in history books and musems, along with the feudal system) in many ways the fascination is with an artifact that was left behind from the middle (dark) ages.
I guess everyone needs somebody to look up to. But sweet jesus, try to look up to someone a little more humble than a flamboyant queen who prances around in her tiara tossing out proclimations.
Whoops, that sounds a little too much like me!

Watch out on the advice you hand to people regarding eating garden plants. One common flower within the garden is Foxglove, also known as Digitalis. This plant is extremely poisonous.
Here's the breakdown according to Wikipedia:
"Depending on the species the digitalis plant may contain approximately a dozen deadly physiological and chemically related cardiac and steroidal glycosides. Thus, the digitalis has earned several more sinister monikers: "Dead Man’s Bells", and "Witches’ Gloves".
"The entire plant is toxic (including the roots and seeds), although the leaves of the upper stem are particularly potent, with just a nibble being enough to cause death. Early symptoms of ingestion include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, wild hallucinations, delirium, and severe headache. Depending on the severity of the toxicosis the victim may later suffer irregular and slow pulse, tremors, various cerebral disturbances, but especially of the vision (unusual color visions with objects appearing yellowish to green, and blue halos around lights), convulsions, and deadly disturbances of the heart."

Hey guys...great show about the Star Trek convention. I'm a huge fan of all the shows. Glad you like the screensaver. I have it on my laptop. Sorry to hear Marc doesn't like the sound effects. I love em!!!! You can turn the sound off and still have the effects going, which I do when listening to your show. Lets have coffee sometime soon.
Love ya, Michael

Don't forget that Q sort of had the hots for Janeway. Okay, she was just a few power tools short of a lesbian but still.
I'm sooooooo excited about the meet and greet. Buzz and I are gonna have to have cute little outfits. How about little blue short minidresses like the girls on Star Treck wore? :)
Love

Saying you're hot for Janeway pretty much says you're gay.
I don't care what you say, at the end of the day, you are gay, you are gay YOU ARE GAY!!!
Said by: Fausto at September 13, 2006 05:17 PM
LOL!!! Yeah, I guess you have a point, Fausto.
Oh, and Marc, I'm a dog person too. Um... but probably not in the same way you are. Woof Woof!!! ;)

Hey guys:
I'm surprised pup Don didn't mention the William Shatner Roast they had televised on Comedy Central a short while back. OMG, it was hilarious when Betty White and George Tekei got up to do their stuff. It was raunchy! Too bad they had to bleep out most of what they had to say, but you got the picture!
As for the short blue outfits... Well, mine is lent out so you'll have to settle for tight black or green latex rubber on me :)
Can't wait to see you boys in two weeks!
Still kinky,
Buzz

Whoops.... Hey Marc I forgot to tell you have a great time in London!! I'll be going there in November for Thanksgiving. I've seen the Harrods memorial: A ring encased in glass that was supposed to be a gift to Diana before the accident. Quite interesting, but ugh, how tacky!
Fausto: You prance and toss whatever you want baby, you're tiara sparkles much more brighter and you have personality, not to mention better looking blue hair!
Love ya lots!

Sorry Marc, I LOVED Fausto's Star Trek screensaver in the background. Where can I get that?
Said by: Aaron C at September 13, 2006 10:14 PM
Marc, oh Jesus - avoid Harrods like the plague. I used to work there for 4 years. It's a hideous tourists' playground. If you do go, try and see parts of the store that tourists can't be bothered to go to like the third floor furniture floor - it's beautiful! Harvey Nichols is much more gay and gorgeous!
Sarah is right - way up there at the top of this post, this country certainly does not need the useless, waste-of-time, money-sucking, lazy, out-moded royal family (I won't even deign to give them capital letters!). I'd like to think we'd be better off with a President but then we haven't been set a very good example recently have we? I understand that American tourists are attracted to the UK ny the royal family. What are they actually expecting to see? Although, I do hear, Marc, that Liz has requested an audience with you and she's a regular listener to the show. The flag on top of Buckingham Palace now says "Quarter turns for all!"
What else are you planning to do in London? It'd be great to show you Old Compton Street (gayland) and meet up for a drink. I'd look after him, Fausto.

No guys -- I don't think anyone can re-write FOF as straight. And that's a good thing.

Hey, guys -- Was listening to Friday's show and you were complaining that there weren't many comments this week. So, I officially move from lurker to poster with this one.
Love your show in general, and particularly love the fact that you're unabashedly adorkable. (That's the phrase my husband uses for "adorable and dorky" all rolled into one.) The Star Trek show was great, many laugh-out-loud moments (which tend to make the folks on the morning train edge away from me).
Keep up the good work. Maybe I'll be posting more often, now that I've popped the posting cherry!
Hugs from San Francisco!

Hey Mark with a K! Glad we are in agreement re: the royal family--WTF is the point of them? I just recently became a British Citizen and had to swear that I thought the queen was the best thing since sliced bread. Luckily I escaped the test that everyone is forced to take now. I don't really get the attraction for tourists--not like Liz is going to appear on the balcony and wave, but they all stand around in front of Buckingham Palace anyway. . . Hoping I can tag along if you get Marc down to Soho for a drink--I'm a fag-hag without any fags since I moved from the States! Though my new work colleague seems a bit 'ting-a-ling' as they say on the FOF...I can only hope....

I also liked the Star Trek Screensaver Sounds!
I wouldn't recommend taking Digitalis either - it's used for heart failure patients and is deadly if taken incorrectly.
