FOF #379 - When Hal Met Fred - 08.31.06

Why do male computer voices sound gay? Is it their nasal superiority, their stoicism, or their crazy synthesized lisps that make them so?
On today's show Marc and I recreate two of the most famous computer voices- "Hal" from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and "Fred," Apple Computers MacInTalk Speech synthesized voice. We hook them up online with HILARIOUS RESULTS.
See our podcast really will make your iPod go gay.
Listen to the internet's favorite gay couple as we talk about how computers are being used to write jokes for children (they aren't that funny so don't get too excited), guys with two cocks, genetic pre-dispositions to surviving plagues, and whale vomit (and why it's so valuable.)
Whale vomit? Eeeew. Yes whale vomit.
The podcast that makes your iPod go gay (but from the looks of your playlist, it already was) the Feast of Fools.

That was the most genius show opening you've had so far! You go Hal!

Snakes on a plane sounds like a bad gay porno movie.

I think "Quarter Turns" will one day join "The devil made me do it", "Sit on it", and "Make it so!" as a pop culture catchphrase started by an entertainment medium.
I have taken every opportunity to spread the word of "Quarter Turns" on my job. Some of the refrigerators we sell have water filters that install and remove with a quarter turn, then sliding the filter in or out. The most challenging thing is saying "to remove the filter, you do a quarter turn, then pull it out, then push the new one in and give it a quarter turn," with a straight face, but the private joke helps add energy to the sales pitch.
But enough about me, great show as always. As much as I LOVE the shows with Ronnie, Amanda, or Cesar, it is nice to have just the two of you bouncing off each other. The sweetness of your relationship comes through in your interactions with each other.
The gene to resist HIV sounds promising for some kind of gene therapy that may eventually end this horrible pandemic. That would be a great day.

I agree with David- it's lovely when it's just the two of you :) and that opening skit was absolutely HILARIOUS! "Quarter Turns! Daaaaaaiiiiissssyyyyyy" Quarter Turns...for EVERYONE!" I was laughing my pants off :D! xx

hahahahaha. That was one of the funniest things I think I have ever heard. Skits like those are what make you guys so popular. I will never look at my computer the same way again.

WOW. The best opening EVER. I swear, it was like Fausto was hosting a seance and my boxy, beige little Macintosh Plus was talking to me from the beyond. Fred! It's been so long!
And Marc's HAL has a beautiful singing voice. I don't know if I can even listen to the rest of the show now, that was so good.
If this doesn't get Apple to send you a truckload of hardware, I really don't know what they're thinking.

Fausto and Marc:
Watch out for Fred! He's a wily one that Fred. Fred will steal your forks and hide dead fish in your kitchen if he doesn't get a good podcasting contract from you guys. Be careful! Fred is a jealous West Coaster with caviar taste and I'm sure he demanded to be picked up from the airport in a limo. Am I right?

Geeze! Even for a straight guy, Marc makes a pretty alluring HAL. Imagine how different 2001 a Space Odyssey would have been if Marc would have been the real HAL.

Hal, Open the podcasting bay doors Hal. HAL?!
Said by: Jason at August 31, 2006 02:36 PM
Like Yzma.... that opening was creepy beyond all reason. Sort of in a "Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka" endearing sort of way.
*shudder*

Ok, today's opening was totally freaky...and yet, strangely arousing. You're really good at doing that voice, Fausto! You should do it more often. :)

Today's show reminded me of a punny joke. What do girls from Alabama and bears have in common? They both lick their paws.

Haha! Oh, my god! that was a great begining to the show. I have 1 comment on the pluto not being a planet issue. yes Marc is right; Pluto is still a planet. Well acording to The Colbert Report that is. but anyways, Fausto that was a wonderful impression and Marc, your voice was so sexy!

Pluto never was a very good planet. What has pluto done for me lately?
Said by: Fausto at September 1, 2006 01:05 PM
Fausto & Marc, I'm speaking as a listener, not a relative: that was an absolutely astounding, genius beginning, a true classic! If the Apple boys & girls don't hear this and appreciate it, that would be their loss! Both of you did a superb job; your voices were perfect for the roles you played. Bravo to both of you! Hugs, Mami/Patricia
