FOF #377 - Does Religion Make You Fat? - 08.29.06

So many American religious practices center around food that a study suggests they may promote unhealthy eating habits and gluttony- some of the very same things the proposed religions shun.
On today's show the lovable Amanda Steinstein joins me to dig our heels in deep into American religions and who, how and why so many of them just love to eat.
Just where can I join these delicious sounding churches? I wouldn't be so against going to mass on Sundays if there was free rotisserie chickens being passed out.
Maybe the problem with organized religion isn't corruption or hypocrisy, its that they don't pass out wet naps with the bbq chicken and corn on the cob!
Eat until you get your fill of fabulousness- the Feast of Fools.

Great show...but one question please...Do people think that regular guests on the show should also be listeners of the show? I find it weird when Fausto's friends don't actually listen to the show they're on...it makes me feel weird somehow. What do ya'll think?

I wanna see (hear?! :S) you on the show, Jason! :D I reckon you'd be great!

His 'friends' might not listen, but this momma shore do! Even when I'm on it...
Said by: Patricia Fernós at August 29, 2006 08:41 AM
And that is one of the things I love about you, Momma Fernos.
So, if I have never been on the show, and I listen to every episode, no matter what, does that make me a better friend??? I've bought a T-shirt, and I will be giving money for the LA fund, even though I won't be able to be there, so that should count for something. :-)
So, anyway, having grown up in one of the more mainstream Christian churches (Church of Christ), I was witness to many people with weight problems. I think there may be something to the theory suggesting a "substitution addiction," in which food takes the place of alcoholism or sexual addiction.
There may also be something to the fact that most Christian churches do not have dietary restrictions. The few exceptions that come to mind are the Mormons and the Seventh Day Adventists. The co-founders of Unity--my church--were vegetarians and extolled the benefits and virtues of such a lifestyle, but did not impose it as an article of faith or a condition of membership. For the churches that have not had the dietary restrictions before now, any attempt to advocate such a thing will have people running for their Bibles to show verses they say prove that Christians are not subject to such restrictions.
Another theory of mine is that in many of the more mainstream Christian churches, the guilt factor is rather high. People are made to feel guilty for the least little thing sometimes, and putting on weight can be used to insulate oneself from emotional upsets. If you pair this with the concept that the emotion-governing chakra is in the abdomen, it starts making sense.
Ok, I've gone on long enough. Great show as always, and keep up the good work!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to say: love the photo montage. I'd love to have been at THAT seder.

The only people who should listen to the show are people who enjoy it. In other words- EVERYONE!
That said, I find it kind of puzzling why anyone wouldn't want to learn from listening to themselves on a show. Maybe it's that whole not liking the sound of your voice?
Said by: Daryl at August 29, 2006 09:48 AM
I rarely listen to any of my episodes once I'm done recording them. I know what I've said, and I've listened to it as I edited it, so why do it another time?

fausto and amanda!
today's show was mostly fabulous but i do have an issue about the 'fat' jokes. not everyone who is skinny is happy or healthy, apart from the news story you discussed i feel kinda offended about some of the comments about people of size. it's bad enough that Christianity makes people feel shitty about who they are and whom they love, why condemn people about what they eat?

"Purdue: Not the Chicken, the University."
"If You Can't Duct It, Fuck It."
Amanda is a marketing genius!
Love the chemistry of you two on the show -- it's so much fun to listen in on your wacky banter. And I always look forward to Fausto's mom's comments on the website. For the record, she is NOT ONLY every gay man's dream mom -- she's a lesbian's dream mom, too! I wish my mom had your sense of humor, Patricia.
Still waiting for a link to that holey virgina turtle photo ... I wanted to weigh in with my expert opinion.

I usually don't listen to shows that I am on, but I listen to shows that I am not on. I think its fairly common that many actors don't watch the movies or the tv shows in which they star. I don't know why, but I think it has to do with ego/self-esteem issues.

Fausto,
You said you had two penis entities: the left side and the right side.
You’re a male of only modest ego.
You should have said, “the east side and the west side”
Using geographic terms when describing one’s cock always makes one more interesting – straight or gay.

oh wow you guys read my letter umm...cool.
Yeah I appologize for the misspellings and things I had already taken the vicoden at that point...
Great show and so glad to hear Amanda again, I adore her!

Fausto. . . that chitin (kytin) comment made my day. i dunno why it just did. You rock and den some!!

Raequel...I never intended to make fun of overweight people. I'm sorry if it came across that way. Being one myself, I'm the very last person to throw stones.
I just found the research interesting, and the speculations of the causal relationships between faith and weight.
One thing they didn't suggest is that obesity and religion both tend to run in families, so it makes sense there might be a correlation there.
Maia....I wish I could take credit for the duct tape joke, but I can't. Nor can I take credit for my favorite truism about duct tape:
"Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together."
I've always liked that quote, and a few years ago my mom found it on a little plaque in a thrift store and sent it to me, and it's hanging in my foyer...that is to say, the eight inches of wall next to my front door before it opens into my living room.

Amanda, is that right next to your "Billy the Bass" plaque that sings "Take me to the River?"
Said by: Marc at August 30, 2006 03:05 AM
Oh Amanda i wish you could be on the show more often! You're brilliant and i love the way you inject your arguments with little points ('the word of man') and i find myself siding with you almost all the time :) loved the show guys - it's nice to have 2 people on one time and a whole bunch the next it gives each one a whole new dynamic *laughs at Marc's comment*
Said by: Oli at August 30, 2006 07:47 AM
instead of cameltoe mary, how about virgin mary on a camel? lol. another funny show!
Said by: jack at August 30, 2006 11:54 AM
No, Marc, I don't have a Billy Bass. However, it's across from a painting my mom did which is next to a painting one of my best friends did.
Ain't no crap on *my* walls. Unless you count my fabulous collection of realistic fake money, which includes an actual counterfeit $5 that someone was passed at McDonald's and which another store discovered when they tried to spend it and therefore which I bought from that person for $5.
