FOF #342 - They Hate Us for Our Freakness - 07.04.06

Podcast
Happy Independence Day everyone!
As you enjoy this special holiday FOF, take a moment to contact your local congressperson to inform them that you want to keep the internet free and independent from the evil corporate money grubbing telecommunications companies. Click here to learn more about the cause of Net Neutrality.

Marc's out of town, so my honey-skinned contingent of the Feast of Fools, César Torres and the Rev. DJ join me to talk to my mother about depression.

Patricia is great at curing the blues, weather it's listening to her talk about getting a massage, or actually understanding the nature of depression which is misplaced anger. You don't know why you is so mad, so you hurt someone else, or yourself. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Hate the Feast of Fools for our freedom, stay for our mouth watering ribs.

Gosh, your mom is amazing fausto. Tell her I said so. If she doesn't wanna hear it, tell her to go get another message, just kidding! GOSH I love you guys. UGHHHH SUPERMAN. A digitally reduced cock is okay for me any day, especially in tights...

Said by: Adam Hart at July 4, 2006 02:15 AM

This show was a lot of fun to listen to. I was rolling when Fausto's mom cracked the whip on her boy (May I speak!!). DJ and Cesar compliment each other well.

Happy 4th to everyone, although to be honest I think Americans have less to be proud of this year than any other year that I can remember. We'll have to begin to change that in November.

This is a comment on show #342:
Will Smith did play a gay role in 1993. It is a little known, but REALLY good movie called "Six Degrees of Separation". Smith makes out with a couple of guys in the movie and the movie had a good plot to boot. Go see it!

Hey Fausto, one of my good friends is an ex-ex-gay (i guess you could call him). If you don't come across an ex-gay to do an interview I'm sure he would be willing to share what he's gone through. He grew up as a southern baptist as well, so he's been through some shit. If you want more info let me know. Another good episode. :-)

We love and miss you V-Marr! Depression is a bitch. Kick it's ass!

Said by: Ben from MI at July 4, 2006 08:32 AM

V-Marr, you are one of the brightest stars in the constellation that is the Feast of Fools.

The podosphere is darker without your brilliant light.

You are a strong, powerful, beautiful woman, and you have the power to transcend this challenge.

I will be holding you in the healing light, knowing that strength, balance, and joy are yours for the taking. Reach out and claim your power.

I'll be looking forward to hearing your voice on the podcast soon!

Patricia,

I am a Reiki practitioner and was concerned about your description of a Reiki session and that "...they push you so hard." That does not sound like Reiki as I was taught it. I was taught to make only light contact with the body and not to apply pressure. In fact, we often hold hands over the body, because we are then in the body's energy field, and the healing can be more effective.

It sounds like somebody was combining modalities in a way that may have hurt more than it was supposed to help. The massage session where the therapist held her hands over you and you felt the heat and received the healing sounds closer to Reiki than the "pressure" you experienced from the other practitioner.

Let me also say that I'm glad you did find your perfect healer and that you healed from depression. Let me also say that you are the coolest mom on the internet, and I'm glad you support your son and his work. Stay cool and powerful!

Said by: David at July 4, 2006 10:18 AM

Simple definition for depression: Anger turned inwards.

That doesn't mean being angry with yourself. It often comes from not knowing how to deal with anger. Instead of letting it out, you start to bottle it up. Then the negative self talk starts.

I'm so stupid.

No one would ever want to be with me because I'm too fat.

I hate my life.

Depression almost always goes hand and hand with swings of seratonin and other chemicals in the brain. No one knows for sure which comes first, the body changes or the mental ones. Either one can cause changes to the other.

I've battled depression for over 20 years. I am sure that many people that are gay or bi have dealt with it, feeling that they are outsiders, freaks, unsure of themselves, not knowing who they confide in. In my case it came from years of training by an abusive and neglectful father, a mother that deserted me when I was born, and a husband with anger and alcohol problems.

Cesar was right - enough sleep is a huge healer. Be careful not to try to cure yourself with drugs and alcohol. Stop the self talk when it starts. Allow yourself to be angry.

I keep a sign on my office wall: Honor the full sweep of your emotions. It is ok to be angry, it is not all right to hurt others with it. It is all right to be sad, but not to dwell in it. It is not wrong to feel what we think of as negative emotions like envy, jealousy, greed. What is wrong is if we choose to stay in a rut with them.

You guys have actually helped me a lot with my battle with depression. A little over a month ago I decided to go off my medication. You guys give me daily laughs, which is exactly what I need. (OK, the biggest laugh was when you gave a shout out to me and said, "he's hot".

Sexuality and trying to deal with it can have a very depressing effect. (For the time being I am celibate by choice. I got tired of jerks. I'm fantastic in bed, but I don't like anyone enough to allow that to be the only part of our lives that we share.) You guys make me feel sexy.

I would love to say that you are the cure for depression, but I am afraid that there are too many close minded people out there. For me, though, you are 10 times as good as Prozac.

Kisses

PS If I ever get back to the Chicago area (remember, I am in Italy) I would love to take you guys out to lunch.

Said by: Chris Peterson at July 4, 2006 10:20 AM

Fausto,

I share your suspicion that Patsy Ramsey murdered JonBenet.

She stayed too drugged up for too long after the murder, and could not be questioned by the police until she was finally off the medicine. Then, she only allowed one journalist in the entire country to interview her: Dan Miller of WSMV in Nashville. He accepted the invitation, but was severely limited in the questions he could ask. The interview was a mess, and she spent most of it evading the questions she allowed to be asked.

Furthermore, there was a story that surfaced around the same time that JonBenet had told Patsy in public that she did not want to do the pageants anymore, and Patsy flew into a huge rage. I'm not sure if the story ever was substantiated, but it would explain a lot.

Said by: David at July 4, 2006 10:57 AM

Chris, thank you so much for sharing your powerful story with us, and you are hot, not matter what gender you may be. :) I'd love to have lunch with you!

One time I told my mom that I didn't want to do pageants anymore, and she said "Good, cause you're too old and fat to win in them anyways." And then I told her I wasn't one of her fans, and then we got into a huge cat-fight in from of Deborah from Redbook. Later that night my mom beat me up with cans of bathroom cleanser and made me help her cut the roses in the back yard with an axe.

True story!

Said by: Fausto at July 4, 2006 11:33 AM

Chris, you hang in there and surround yourself by good people and fight the good fight every single day. There are some times when you'll feel down, but those times go away over time, too. Say hello when you are in Chicago!

Chris, it was absolutely great to hear your story. Thanks so much for sharing it. I have personally never been depressed or really even close, but I have had to deal with it in my family. And it's definitely sad to see it happening. My mother herself has made excellent strides with the depression through seeing a psychologist, through medication, and through finding support groups of people she can talk to. I have always tried to be kind and supportive of her through difficult times. And that's what a person needs.

My mother went through a difficult childhood to be certain, and at the time when she was younger she didn't get the help that she needed. But after being in an abusive relationship about 5 or 6 years ago, she made the decision, finally, to stop living how she was and to move out and move forward with her life. She's wonderful for it, especially considering she is a single mother and raises two children on her own.

I really hope that V-Marr gets better because we all love her a lot and want to see her back on this show. She's wonderful for the show, and wonderful as a person.

Great show as always guys! Your mother is wonderful Fausto. She seems like such an understanding and kind mother, but still keeps a firm hand on you. She reminds me a lot of my mother. Hope Marc is doing well.

Kisses as well. You guys have inspired me to go out more and have more fun. Thanks a bunch.

First, I want to thank you listeners who have said such lovely things about me! I appreciate it very much! Second, Fausto, I'm sorry, but that 'scene' you described above about me was a dream... I don't even use bathroom cleaner - I've always made sure some one else cleaned the bathrooms! And Chris, thanks too for your letter about your own experience with depression. After speaking to Fausto, I felt that we really didn't describe how complex depression is and how many different factors can bring it on and help relieve it. Bless you! And for Fausto and the Rev., I look forward to your visit! Love!

Said by: Patricia Fernós at July 4, 2006 02:21 PM

Patricia, all the comments are well deserved! And yes, I figured it was one of Fausto's dreams. It seemed a bit "out of there".

And on today, I really like the morals the country were founded on but I am remarkably unhappy with the present state of the country. People seem blind to the state of our country. I don't like this blind patriotism we exude. We're showing pride in a country where gross abuses of power are occuring.

I read the most interesting article yesterday by a conservative (republican) columnist which stated that President Bush was: "abrasive, immodest, reckless in the use of power, incurious about the world, and utterly sure he is a king of a court that he rules ("The Decider") rather than the president of a republic he serves." I think it has trickled down to other politicans. Wouldn't you agree?

Said by: Kyle at July 4, 2006 02:45 PM

It's a scene from "Mommie Dearest."

Chris there's a proverb, laughter is like medicine to the soul. Laughter is the easiest remedy to what ale the soul, it doesn't cost you anything. Just show those pearl white and smile boo.. ;) Sometimes it's hard smile through a situation you can make it. Take it Day by Day. If you're in chicago let us know.

Momma Patricia, I'm looking forward to coming to Austin and spend some time with you. I know we're going to have a blast. kisses..

Funny too, the space shuttle launched today while I was watching the movie.

Aww V-marr hang in there, hon. You are missed and loved and sorry to hear that you're not feeling up to par. Know that people out there, that you've never met, care about you and want you to be better and back on the podcast. You rock girl!

Said by: Kristen at July 5, 2006 01:49 PM

Chris, what a wonderful message. Thank you so much. I do have depressive episodes from time to time. I've just gotten over one. I was very involved in community things for a few years and totally burned myself out. For the past six months I've been going through a lot of grief and doing anything I could to get out of it. One thing that helped was seeing the movie "Peaceful Warrior". I had read the book years ago and it really put a lot of things into perspective about the way I view myself in relation to the people and things around me. Life it too precious to waste feeling sorry for ourselves. There is so much to enjoy around us even when things aren't going out way.

V-marr, we love ya honey. I can understand about feeling down and not wanting to go out and deal with things. Know that you are loved, both by your close friends like Marc and Fausto and by your adoring fans out here in the internet. I look forward to the FOF shows you are on because you always make me laugh.

And to Miss Ronnie, wherever you are, I hope school is going well for you. I miss hearing your voice terribly, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I learned that lesson the hard way and crashed hard. So you do what you need to do baby. Best of luck to you.

Patricia, you obviously did something right because your son has created a worldwide community that is held together with love and laughter. It's a shame the governments of the world can't take a lesson from the Feast of Fools. In this thread of messages alone we have people from all over the world talking and joking and enjoying what each other has to share. The name of the show may be very tongue-in-cheek, but it really is a feast, isn't it?

Marc, have fun in Erie. I know it's a challenge but I'm sure you'll be able to manage it.

Fausto, Cesar and DJ, what a great show. Thank you for your own brand of holiday fireworks. :)

Love,
pup don
