FOF #305 - Tiptoeing Through the Tulips - 05.07.06

Spring showers bring May flowers and what fabulous flowers they are! Most of my family flew in from Puerto Rico to Chicago to celebrate my younger sister Talia's graduation from her doctorate program in Math from UIC. She's Doctor Talia now.
So exhausted with my family, my sister Beatriz and her daughter Victoria (V-Mo), and Marc and I went for a walk around the neighborhood admiring the flowers around to a local lesbian bar to bridge the gap between straight women and lesbians. And also give my 15 year old niece Victoria a heaping dosage of big-city lesbian culture (out on the sidewalk, of course.)
It seems some guys have been going around bars in the neighborhood, putting GHB into lesbians drinks and luring them outside. Nasty stuff.
Click here to check out the lovely pics taken during out walk.
It's a breath of fresh air- the Feast of Fools.

Fausto, it was only a matter of time before Russell Davies tried it... Doctor Who may still go pink though despite the report; word is he's been trying to go brokeback for a while now.

I always love the shows you do with your family best!!!!! this was great. thoroughly enjoyed it. BUT, I have to say in the defense of straight people, that I DO NOT feel validated by billboard and movie plots about straight people. It's some deluded victim fantasy that you have as a gay person that somehow if movie plots were about "the gays" you would feel more accepted in society.
In fact, I feel MORE ALIENATED by these images of straight life as reflected in mainstream culture. Because as a straight girl who lives with her male partner but doesn't want to get married or have children and who doesn't shave her legs or want jewelry or shop at walmart or drink light beer or support the war, or want a stadium built in my back yard, having mainstream culture inundate me with some sort of perfect American straightness MAKES ME FEEL COMPLETELY LONELY AND MISUNDERSTOOD -- more so because its SUPPOSED to be about ME!
But, the wierdness of feast of fools and my friends and their beautiful odd art, keeps me feeling connected and happy -- NOT watching the latest romantic comedy. Its not about gay/straight (though lets face it, gay people are way more fun), its about WEIRD!

wow, i didn't have to do the straight girl rant today. This isn't to put anything you said kerthyfix, because I agree with you but now i feel that whatever I say is repetitive. oh well.
Anywho about today's podcast , ahh another podcast on the go that include the fun impromptu interviews and teaching so much to V-mo. It was a very insightful and fun podcast and I like hearing marc on a podcast again. i just hope no one else gets pulled out for a few days because of a bug. I can't wait for tomarrow's podcast and hope everyone is having a decent monday.

Well Kerthy, you are like extended family to me, so the only thing I wish is that you had been there! It's been such hard work dealing with my lovely family that we posted a rerun today! But a very good show (Leslie Hall) so enjoy guys.

Your family seems so sweet Fausto. Your sister and Niece are awesome. Another great show.

Wow, does everyone agree with kerthyfix? I am surprised no one has responded to her statement regarding victimization and being gay. I find her words rather ignorant given that people are still killed in this country for being gay, and the mere mention of gay marriage gets people enraged.
Hey, that is great that you don't identify normative models of straight behavior, but just think that if even YOU feel alienated, think how much more gay people do. I mean, you are not going to get dirty looks or comments for holding your boyfriend's hand in public, so in some sense there is still validation for simply being straight.

I think that in terms of gay movies. Most of the gay community is happy to see these "gay movies" because it depicts us, in the main stream culture, as being human beings and brings to light the ways in which gays are similar to straights. Brokeback Mountain for example brought to light how we have strong feelings and feel love for another just the same as straight people, ours is just the same sex. So we embrace these movies because they're helping assimilate us into a culture that loves pushing us to the side. It's not about the movie itself, it's about the conversation, insight, understanding, and acceptance that the movie hopefully brings, on a broader scale.
For example, my best friends brother never really understood why I was gay or why I would want to be with a guy. He accepted it, but never really understood it. After watching Brokeback Mountain though, he gained a better understanding of what we go through and feels that his questions and curiousities have been answered.

I was referring to the part of her comment about how straight movies are crap and ficticous and all that, I 'm sorry if I didn't clarify. i'll try to be more clearer on mht I'm reacting to.

I particularly enjoyed this episode a lot. It was very nice listening to you guys walk through andersonville and stop by to look at the flowers. I feel like I've been priviledged to be with the family of Fausto as you walk and talk with Beatriz and Victoria.
