FOF #285 - Woman on a Road - 04.10.06

Lesbian folksinger Ferron bought her first guitar as a young woman from cutting grass for $1 an hour. She was so nervous at her first gig, she could barely stand up to play.
Through the years a lot has changed, she's gotten married, is a mom, struggled with a major record company, and has become one of the seminal figures (or should that be "ovarial" figures) in women's music.
Ferron nowdays lives on Saturna Island, a small island in British Columbia with her partner. A mini isle of lesbos, she travels all over the world sharing her passion and her voice for the icon of a traveling musician. She's just release her first album of original music in over seven years, "Turning Into Beautiful."
Today we talk with the beloved lesbian musician Ferron about women's music, why Canada is such a stomping ground for lesbian folk musicians, the heated debate over transgendered inclusivity in lesbian seperatism and why she thinks that change is happening, and why heated discussions on gender might save the GLBT community in the future.

Ferron (Mistress of Iron) is such a wonderful person to listen to (on the podcast & the music) Her relaxed & honest manner is so refreshing. Seems like she's achieved something very special... to be a genuine human being.
Nice interview. Thanks-

Leave it to a Canadian lesbian to soothe the soul and to let everyone breathe a little easier. Whew!

It was a great show. Brought back memories of when I was younger and my lesbian aunts would play her music. Its also nice to see gay folks becoming parents. My son will be 7 on the 21st and adopting him was the best thing I ever did with all my ill gotten corporate swag.
Thanks!!! Have a good trip to the Big Apple!
