FOF #283 - The Man Who Put the F.U. in Funny - 04.06.06

Bruce Vilanch put the F. U. in funny for a lot of folks. And boy does he on todays podcast! Bruce comes on the show today to talk about why he's coming to Chicago in May, why the Academy Awards blackballed Brokeback and where he keeps all his t-shirts.
Bruce started his career as a journalist in Chicago, after trying to make it as an actor. His career took off as a comedy writer when stage comedy legend Bette Midler hired him to "punch up" (write jokes) her act. He later moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for television shows like Cher's post-Sonny tv variety hour titled "Cher" (imagine that!) He also wrote a lot of material for Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers. And of course, Bruce Vilanch is the man behind most of your favorite jokes that appear on the Oscars and the Tony award ceremonies. He makes these shows watchable. We think that next year he should hold his jokes hostage and demand that a gay man host the ceremonies. It's the least he can do after the tragdy of having "Brokeback Mountain" lose to "Crash."
He took over the part of Edna Turnblad from Harvey Fierstein in the popular Broadway hit "Hairspray" and talks about John Travolta taking on the role for the film adaptation of the brodway musical adapation of the original film. Whew.
Bruce will be in town on Memorial Day Weekend to host the International Male Leather Contest. This "leather get together" is a must for leather and fetish fanatics. It's always amazing to see a fancy hotel like the Palmer House Hilton overun with Leather men, slaves, domanitrixes, and all sorts of assorted sexual freaks from all over the world. Yes, we'll be there to cover the event again.

A delightful show, as always. I couldn't help thinking that, having interviewed Kathy Griffin and Bruce Vilanch, you've got potenial for a whole series of Hollywood Squares panelists. Gilbert Gottfried with Amanda Steinstein? Genius.
By the way, when I read Savage Love column this morning, found that Josh Kilmer-Purcell was the special guest advisor. Once again, FOF leading the pack...

I love that you guys got to talk to Bruce Vilanche. I had heard of him but never really knew what he did or who he was...
Not only did I get to hear him speak and figure out what a wonderful person he was, Fausto remembered what I said about Beyonce's M&M policy. Either way you seem to keep pulling interesting people to listen to that follow through my other circles of interest (as Townes points out)
Keep up the good work. And love to Miss Ronnie because she deserves it always.

Amazing show guys. I watched Get Bruce a few nights ago and re-read his book. What a great talent there ... and a T-shirt collection to die for!!!!
Sorry I didn't send in any questions, I though he was coming on during IML. I would have bdeen interested in his take on coming out .. since he did it so very long ago. Its nice that you have interviewed somebody older than me.
I'd also be interested in his take on the current generation of gay families. Couples with kids etc... there area lot of jokes in that one.
All My Love;

Great interview with Bruce. I saw him in "Hairspray" and he is hilarious. One of the brilliant minds of comedy. Thanks for bringing him to us!

Wow, I've seen Bruce on Celebrity Fit Club but it never crossed my mind that the man was gay. A surprise for me; regardless, it was a very funny show.

George, are you SERIOUS? The guy just screams gay. I think they even referred to all the contestants as "girls," didn't they?
Bruce definitively ranks up high with one of my all-time favorite interviews for 2006, and the year isnt even over yet!
Be sure to check out the IML GoGuide 2006 in newstands all over Chicago (at the last week in May) to read more about this interview with Bruce Vilanch.

So to say. ;) You guyz are great, your shows keep me laughing while I driving along on the shitty roads.
Keep it up, and don't let the fame get your head to big, so to speak. << See I suck at comdy.... LOL
Take care.
