FOF #273 - A Family Affair - 03.23.06

Char Cepek wept when her son John Charles came out as gay. She cried because of the fear of the pain she knew her son would face in life, over the anxiety over the risks, discrimination and dangers that all gays and lesbians (and bisexuals and trannies) face in their lives. Char and her husband John already had gay friends, but now their own son came out looking for love and approval from them. He got it.
For Char and John tolerance was never an option. They took the opportunity of having a gay son to learn more about the gay experience and used it to expand awareness with hopes of making the world a place that embraces and celebrates gay people. Now years later, John and Char are leaders in one of the most effective gay rights movements in the United States, PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.)
On today's show we talk to this fabulous courageous couple about the PFLAG, advice on coming out to your parents, their gay son John Charles and their personal experience in dealing with dozens of families who are struggling with accepting their gay children and changing the world one person at a time.
Click here to download their free online pdf brochures like "Be Yourself" Questions & Answers for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth.
Also: what does their son John Charles (who's pretty handsome we hear) think about his parents? After the interview Fausto talks to JC about his family and his boyfriend.

the show was really insightful and helped me finish a paper without overstressing about it. PFLAG was the grounp of people at the 2005 Mpls. Pride Festival who let me know I was doing the right thing ignoring my friends who are ok with people with being different, but don't want to search them out.
It was a cute show today and I can't wait for the next one as always, your making me into a FOF Junkie. lol.
I hope evreyone who listens to FOF has a great day.

Great show today guys, very informative. I have a friend in NY (he's 13) who is deathly worried about what his Catholic parents will do when/if they find out that he's gay. I have already talked him out of suicide twice and running away once. I guess the big question is, what are the legal recourses for anybody who takes in a kid this age who has either run away or been kicked out of their home for being gay. Maybe a future episode you could have a lawyer on the show to talk about this matter.

Great show today! It was really heartwarming to hear John's parents being supportive and trying to spread the love. But is there anything like this available in the U.K?
Agreeing with RQA on his point that maybe you should try and get a lawyer on to talk about the legal implications: can your parents actually LEGALLY disown you under the age of 16? If they throw you out are they still liable for your care?

What a powerful show!!! I love it, I hope those out there who are still questioning making that decision know that there is support, and love for all of them. I remember making the transition myself, and still am in many ways... All you have to do is take that first step, and the doors will open, sometimes the road may be rocky, but remember that evry step we take in life will lead us to the next, and it helps knowing that people are out there that will love you and help you along the way... Thanks Fausto and Marc..
Love you guys as always...

Very "After School Special",
Thanks so much for doing such a wonder job with the topic :D
I think I could even let my mom listen to this one (there weren't any fisting references wehre there?).
Great job guys!

Wow! What a GREAT show, fellas. I only came out to my parents a little over 2 years ago and even though they have been very loving and supportive with my partner and I, they are still working through their own feelings about it. This show, along with the show with Mr. Levi K., have been very close to my heart as a gay man brought up in a strongly religious family (mom is Catholic, dad is Methodist) and I would like to thank you for addressing these issues. I am planning on burning a copy of today's show and sending it to my parents to listen to. Thanks again! Muah!

This was one of your best shows I have heard. I might even buy a t-shirt to support your cause!!

Simon, there were no fisting references, but there was mention of a "butt plug" at one point. But play it for your parents. They shouldn't even know what a "butt plug" is. Well, maybe not. I don't know your parents. LOL!
Marc and Fausto, once again you never cease to amaze me. You can go from something silly and fun at a cocktail pajama party to something as serious and insightful as talking to PFLAG parents. I know I mentioned this before but I recently came out to my parents at age 36. I've thought for the past few years that it was really too late and there was no point, but you know, it has made a world of difference. I've written about it on my MySpace blog if anyone wants to get a different perspective on the issue of coming out as an adult. Just click my name under this post. Don't worry, even with all my leather bdsm interests, my profile is very tame and pretty clean.
Thanks again for such a wonderful show. I hope the folks at HBO know what a great show they are sponsoring. :)
With much love,
pup don

hey, awesome show!
There is still sex ed. in school. we have it in 4th and 5th grade but its not very in depth. then in 7th grade we have it in gym and in science, 8th grade in gym, and 1/2 a year of health in high school. Actually, my sex ed. unit is just starting on monday...fun fun! (our teacher is actually REALLY open and told us to come up w/ any questions possible...even if they are just to make him embarrassed to talk about it!)

Wow~ You guys amaze me again! Funny there was reference to "car" talk, because that's how my mom outed me when I was 18! In the car, on my way to NYC to live, she just blurted it out and said she would love me no matter what I chose to do with my life as long as I was happy and safe (kink & all!)... PFLAG rocks! Wish it were around when I was coming out. It could have made a difference with my dad!
Love from your kinkster in S. Cal,

I totally agree with the comments so far. It was a really interesting show, and it made me reflect. The New York posse must be getting real excited as April draws nearer.
I've done the HBO survey and it took no time at all, plus I've joined myspace (finally) and befriended FOF.
The song 'Do U Wanna' (heard on FOF #267) is on there as are some other random 'lil inventions.

Thanks for the great show about PFLAG and the great work they do. It's encouraging to know just how many parents are supportive of their children. I wish my parents would take advantage of this group, but that doesn't look likely any time soon. I have made more than one effort to give them information about PFLAG, but they are just not ready yet. Maybe in time.
Keep up the good work, guys!

My kudos to Mark, Fausto, and the Cepaks for this program and for addressing the many possible difficulties of coming out and the availability of PFLAG's support. As the comments attest, it has the potential to encourage MANY people to openly acknowledge their homosexuality. I definitely agree that siblings need help in adjusting to gay siblings and I'm sure PFLAG would be very happy to have siblings participate. Fausto's theory that we marry people like our parents is valid in my case - I thought I was marrying someone like my dad but it turned out that I really married my mom! So WATCH OUT! As far as churches go, it's good to remember that churches are run by people, and so are as political as they are religious, some of them even more so. Therefore at times the leaders get sucked into making statements and having policies that, though unethical, are popular with the masses, so that the masses will shell out the economic support churches need to survive.

Hey guys,
Always love your show!! Thanks for the glimpse into Chicago humor! I was listening to Miss Understood, and just happened to be sharing the laughs with my husband (who IS FROM THAILAND!) We had great fun. By the way, Miss Understood's boy-fling, whose name is Poo (that's pronounced "Boo" in Thai, and it means CRAB, not CRAP!!)
We love your twist on the news and current events, and how you turn every subject into an interesting topic that goes down interesting thought patterns.
Love ya!!

Love the show as usual. The Cepak's are the parents that gay kids dream of. I will say that John Sr's voice sounded a little like V-Mar at times. Great interview guys.
All my best,

It's parents like this that give me hope for our society as a whole. I applaud PFLAG and The Cepak's for all their hard work. I hope more parents can be as loving and accepting of their gay children as The Cepak's.
