FOF #266 - Tim Miller Gets Naked - 03.14.06

Tim Miller makes a living traveling around the country talking about his life as a gay man in a way nobody else can. Usually getting naked in his solo one man performances, Tim weaves a tapestry of his personal experience mixed with decades of stories from being an AIDS activist with ACT-UP to fighting for gay marriage so he and his partner Alistair McCartney can live in the same country.
"For a quarter century, Tim Miller has worked at the intersection of performance, politics, and identity, using his personal experiences to create entertaining but pointed explorations of life as a gay American man—from the perils and joys of sex and relationships to the struggles of political disenfranchisement and artistic censorship," says the jacket of his book.
I always think of french fries when I hear the word disenfranchisement for some reason. Am I weird?
Today Tim Miller comes over to talk about his brand new book "1001 Beds"; a raucous and rowdy exploration of Miller's adventures in a performer's life fiercely lived in his travels through love, politics and art.
Tim probably will be in a city near you, so be sure to check his tour schedule and go check out his shows. We highly recommend it.

I agree notorious. I cant belive anyone would still be tying themselves to Europes dark past. I just thought it was outrageous what she said, so of course I found it hillarious.
Did I pronounce "frocio" correctly?

Yea, Tim! I see that he's headed to my alma mater, Wake Forest, later this month. I was a theatre major there and during my senior year I was the only (openly) gay theatre student. The notorious Fred Phelps and his hate-mongering band of "Christian" in-laws (Westboro Baptist Church) picketed Maya Angelou, a Wake Forest professor of creative writing, at the school. Unfortunately, the bonehead crusaders chose to picket during Thanksgiving break, so no one had to endure their nonsense. The piece you performed on today's show was fantastic! Give 'em hell, Tim!

Wow, I've never heard of Tim until now but after this, I'll have to keep him on the radar screen. I'm not sure if I want to see a man performing naked (what would you expect, I'm straight) but Tim seems to be very intelligent, logical yet artistic in his methods. It's cool when all of that can come together. His performance in the first half of the show was very good and folded a lot of issues into one story.

Fausto, you're definitely not weird for thinking of fries when you hear disenfranchisement. I have the same problem with penalization...I don't think of fries though, how odd.

I first saw Tim at the Tron theatre in Glasgow.
I had just moved to the city and really didn't know many people. He was appearing as part of our 'Glasgay' festival so I gathered myself together and went alone to the show.
I was determined that during the interval I'd talk to someone, just break the ice and meet new people. I got there early and watched to see who came in alone, and who might be a possible candidate to chat with when the time came.
The show started and much as I enjoyed it I have one complaint - it was a one act show! Just as I was gearing myself up, it finished and everyone went home with no chance of impromptu conversation. The only knobs I saw that night were Tim's and my own. And never at the same time.

What a fun show this was... I loved LOVED LOVED Tim's bit... it was awesome! And how interesting that it was really about the FIRST Bush. It was still entirely topical and true to todays' times.

Man you guys are the best. I loved the little easter egg you left at the end of Monday's show. I am one of those dedicated listeners that listens to the end of the cast, not only in hopes that you will come back on for an encore, but also to listen to that great Babyteeth song! Love you guys! And Ms. Ronnie, gurl me and uz got to hang - you've got me saying, HBO - Hot Bitches Only. Don't worry, I didn't take credit for that one. :)
