FOF #265 - Lights Out, Nobody's Home - 03.13.06

Podcast
A blackout forces us
to do today's show "unplugged" and unscripted. The beautiful thing about being at home when the lights go out is that you get an opportunity to stop everything you're doing, appreciate each other, re-evalutate your life, and not take technology for granted.

Listen to a very raw cover of Baby Teeth's "Dream" sung by Fausto (with V-Marr backing up), and a spirited conversation about being young and gay in reference to 60's minute's piece on "The Science Of Sexual Orientation". We're just wondering if the control groups in these studies (also known as straight people) aren't lying when they say they aren't gay.

Lots of talk about carbon monoxide alarms, going to the bathroom in the dark, breakfast cereal conspiracies, gender appropriateness, and the ethics of polygamy.

Please donate to our travel fund by clicking here. Help bring Ms. V-Marr, Ronnie, Amanda, Marc and your flaming blue pal Fausto to the Big Apple to meet you face to face. We've raised $42 dollars so far!

Hey guys & V. Mar!

Well, Marc, you said it and like a true fan of FOF I had to do it-

After listening on my way to work this morning, I just had to chime in on V. Mar's comment about the possible reason people, like me, get into BDSM.

While V. Mar has a very valid hypothisis and one that I happen to somewhat agree with. Each person involved with BDSM has their own story on how/why/when they got involved.

ONE STRONG POINT: Abuse is NOT looked kindly upon on by the Leather Community. I am TOTALLY against abuse of any kind. BDSM is not about abuse as some may think. It is a form of power exchange in a consensual and safe environment between two adults. I just happen to enjoy being the recipient of that exchange to various degrees in many ways.

Yes, I was abused (and not ashamed to say so) as a child until I was about 15, but that abuse only made me stronger in my adult life. It also somewhat 'conditioned' me into a BDSM lifestyle, if you think about it. It was not the reason I got into BDSM. In fact, I'm pretty much a 'Newbie' to the Leather Community (only 3 1/2 years so far). But you wouldn't think so when you see me in action... But that's a whole different story.

And you'll get a much different story, I'm sure, from pup Don.

While there are those that may look at BDSM as only pain giving/receiving (aka- Pain pigs), I'm more of the 'Sensation' slut. I'm not in it for the pain, I'm in it for the endorphin rush high you get after good flogging, electro zap, or good bondage scene! And the closeness you feel from the Dom/Top afterwards is beyond words!

So, while abuse may have played a role in my BDSM lifestyle, it was my choice to be part of it, not the cause.

I really appreciate the way you guys and gals embrace ALL forms of the gay lifestyles and are open to our comments! You know pup Don and myself will totally always be there for you to share!

Your S. California FOF #1 fan and kinkster,
Buzz

Said by: Buzz at March 13, 2006 10:56 AM

Okay, my turn!!! My turn!!! Heh heh. Buzz made many good points. To offer a different point of view, I was not an abused child. I came from an upper-middle class family and the only problems I had with my mom was that I was always a non-conformist and she wanted a kid who would play football, get straight A's and be in the honor society. That wasn't about to happen. I was picked on by the other kids, and while that probably made me the creative freakazoid I am today, I don't really see it as having anything to do with my being kinky. I didn't even discover kink until I was in my late 20's.

Good BDSM play, wether it be power exchange (as in Dom/sub, Master/slave relationships), flogging, hot wax, bondage, etc, all center around the endorphin rush. Some people dive out of planes, some people run marathons and some do dangerous extreme sports to get this natural drug your body produces to begin coursing thorugh your viens and take you to that happy place. Those of us in the BDSM scene just choose to incorporate our quest for the endorphin rush with our sexuality.

I don't get a boner from being hit with a flogger or having hot wax dripped on me, but when done right by the time a session is done I am higher than a kite. Both parties in a scene will get the endorphin rush. The "Top" is the one who gives the sensations and the "bottom" is the one receiving. And a good Top will use his "toys" to take you to that place, and when you are done with a scene they will hold you and give you a tenderness that you won't find anywhere else while you just float away.

And contrary to popular belief, a lot of BDSM folk do not "like" pain. Believe me, when I stub my toe I don't get a stiffy. It's a combination of the interaction between two people, the deep level of connection you can get when engaging in kinky play, and those endorphins (it's a free drug but you gotta work to get 'em).

I can't say if any of this comes from a place in my past. I do know that many of my fetishes come from my inability to deal with being gay. When I was younger and dealing with a closeted sexual awakening, I directed all my sexual energy on non-sexual things and activities, which lead to my interest in things like puppy play (being the puppy, not doing the puppy, thank you very much) and other fetishes. This goes hand in hand with BDSM but is not necessarily the same thing. So I guess some of it comes from our childhoods and some of it is something we get into. But it does take a certain kind of person to embrace it. Either you are going to find the interest in BDSM or you are not. It's the same way that a person may find the pleasure in jumping out of planes or running marathons and others may not.

If any of you have questions, please feel free to write me or send me a message through my space. Clicking on my name here will take you to my MySpace profile.

Thanks for the chance to let me share my story guys. Excellent show as always. Fausto... you totally ROCK! Marc... adorable as always, and V-marr... we love every moment we get to spend with you.

Take care.

Great show, you guys. The unplugged version was totally cool. I actually was scared to death during last night's storm (it woke me up in the middle of the night, wich historically has been impossible before). Maybe you should go unplugged once a month!

Said by: Cesar at March 13, 2006 12:25 PM

On the subject of the beeping CO monitor:

You said it was hard-wired into the power, but many built-in smoke or CO detectors still have a battery backup to ensure they work in the event of a power failure (ours does). When the battery begins to fail, the alarm will chirp, even if the detector is connected to the house current (ours does, and it does get annoying). In this case, the power going out may have drained the battery enough to trigger the warning circuit.

The detector should be detachable from the mounting bracket, and you can see if there is a 9V battery compartment on the underside of the detector. A new battery should solve the beep without your having to resort to more draconian measures involving hammers (it's been tempting...).

Great "unplugged" show. Fausto, you have a great voice, and so does V-Marr. I don't recall hearing Marc sing, so I can't comment on that.

On the subject of the 60 Minutes report, it will be interesting to see if they follow this story to see what becomes of the two young boys. I also felt that the "butch" brother could very easily turn out to be gay as well, and the "femme" brother could turn out to be straight or trans.

I guess this is more of a technical issue then a posting about the show, but I've recently encountered a problem loading the FeastOfFools.net webpage on Firefox. The page layout becomes scattered with the buttons on the left and right of the page appearing at the very end of the page instead of next to the description of the shows. This doesn't happen when I use Safari. Anyone else having this problem?

Said by: Pablo at March 13, 2006 03:21 PM

Also this distortion only seems to happen on the index.php page. Odd?

Said by: Pablo at March 13, 2006 03:23 PM

I just started to listen to this and I must say that Fausto sounds really good singing!

Said by: Lola at March 13, 2006 03:56 PM

Hey there! Loved Fausto and V-Marr's rendition of "Dream." It was actually quite good. All you need is a band of your own and you'll be giving Baby Teeth a run for their money. ;)

Wanted to say a few things about that Science of Sexual Orientation thing. Disclaimer: Not having seen it myself--I don't watch tv--I'm not sure exactly what was said on the show or what kind of evidence they have to back up their statements. OK! The point that gets to me is the idea of a feminization or masculinization of the brain or parts of the brain, and how that affects behavior. The thing is, that the majority of human behavior is learned. We associate the arranging of flowers with feminity and tackling each other on a football field with masculinity, but these things are certainely not the results of instinct or genetics. Both of these things are social constructs. For example: typical western culture we frown upon crying. We find crying annoying. Adults should not cry, although it can be ok for a woman to cry. Men, however, never. We even discourage children from crying although it is more socially acceptable. Now, consider Canadian aboriginal culture. There is no stigma associated with crying at all. It is quite common for men and women to cry openly in public. That is because this is a socially constructed learned behavior. Granted, the act of crying itself is reflex, but whether or not we do it is learned.

Using this reasoning, we see that certain behaviors that we consider to be more or less masculine or feminine are not at all biological. They are social. Therefore, they must not be directly related to the structure of the brain.

Then again, that all isn't to say that sexuality isn't determined in the brain, I just think that you can't really link that directly to behavior. I wonder if they're not going about these studies in the wrong way?

I think I'll get off my soapbox now. Its just that these studies kind of piss me off. I guess it is good that people are interested enough to try and figure these things out, but something about it makes me uncomfortable. Not sure if it is because they look at it like a disease that they can find the cause for and cure or if it is something else.

Pablo, can you email us a screen shot of what you're seeing so we can tell our web developers this? Otherwise, it's hard to know how to fix this problem. thanks!

Am I the only 14 year old that knows about Jem? Oh god, when I was 10 my parents and I were driving around town looking looking for Jem dolls and acessories (Can you say purple and pink Lamé?).

Said by: Cameron at March 13, 2006 04:44 PM

I really enjoy the show today you guys. It seems the wid-west is forced to have a shitty couple of days. Up here in Minnesota, it showed over 10 inches here, and I got to miss school (yay), but I had to shovel all that snow after almost a month of no snow at all.
It's my birthday today, but I can't really go anywhere, so I'm just gonna watch a Movie and hopefully do something this weekend.

Anyway, I loved today's podcast, because it was a change of pace and stil was great even if you didn't have it all 'set' like usual. I can't wait for tomarrow's and I hope you week is a good one now that the black out is done with.

Said by: Rochelle (from MN) at March 13, 2006 04:48 PM

Pablo-I have firefox and the only thing that is weird is because of the brokeback on ice video...

Cameron-I'm 13, never heard of Jems.

We have the same weather here in MI, all weekend its been really warm, in the 60's, but tonight we are expecting it to drop to 30 and snow...dang cold front! bringing tornado watches and crazy thunderstorms...

p.s. I Love Ms Ronnie! Even If she can't chat she'll still say hey...thats the coolest thing ever : )

Said by: uibriain at March 13, 2006 08:16 PM

Cameron, you gotta love Jem. She's truely outrageous. Do yourself a favor and track down a movie called The Apple. I'm convinced they got the look of the Jem cartoon from this movie. And no smarmy comments Buzz! He just hates my taste in movies. :P

I finally got to check out that clip about the twins. I would think that the kid with the nailpolish would be more inclined to being transgendered than gay. While a lot of gay kids show signs of femininity, the fact that he is exhibiting so much feminine behaviour may link towards something other than his being gay. I thought it was interesting that this was never even brough up in the piece. I was also shocked that an "impartial" news report seemed to slant the idea that the kid might be gay as some sort of problem. It reminded me a little of those films of the 50's that taught people how to behave. The horrors of drug use, or YOU could be a HOMOSEXUAL!!! I was really bugged by that. I wish I had seen the whole segment.

Hey, you guys didn't realize we loss power after we left Clark's on Clark.. but I was thinking about when I was nine I was pretty much like that little boy . I played with my sister's dolls thinking I was hairstylist and a diva, very talkative. Always wondered why I was different from everyone else. Never really athletic inclined. I was very sensitive well growing up in church added fuel to that fire. Being a son of Pentecostal Preachers. Being told what they think I should be rather than allowing me grow into my own person. I had to leave home to really understand who I am. I believe your environment play a big part in who you are not just genetics, and what you're exposed to in your youth.

Said by: darius at March 15, 2006 10:19 AM

so I wasn't the only one who used to pretend to bake mud pies *lol* I used to roll stones in the mud and leave them to dry and pretend they were chocolate cakes..

Said by: ebby at March 15, 2006 11:13 AM

That's so weird... I didn't lose power at all that night. But those storms were absolutely FIERCE. I was actually driving back from Wisconsin while they were happening... so I'm not surprised they knocked some power out.

I loved this show... I especially loved the opening, with just Fausto and VMarr singing "Dream" on the Piano. It gave the song a whole new perspective for me.

And you know what... whenver you open with "Dream" I smile huge... it just makes me happy to hear it. :)

Said by: RcktMan at March 18, 2006 03:13 AM

WOW, Fausto you should sing more, I really like the candlelight mix version of the theme song.

Said by: Dick at March 22, 2006 12:59 AM

Fausto, Marc and V-Mar,

I think all of these studies about why people are this way or that way are complete crap. It seems that in these type of social studies the "scientists" always find a way to interpret the results in a way to prove their hypothesis.

I will give you an example. There was a recent study out of Berkley that tracked children for 20 years and they came to the conclusion that all the kids that whine and cried all the time became Conservatives and the ones that didn't became Liberal. From personal experience I know this not to be true. My sister and I were not whiners but we are Conservative, but my brother was the big cry baby and he is a Liberal. All these "scientists" do is provide the conclusion that they think will get them more funding to do more useless studies.

Anyway enough ranting. Fun show as always, and I wish I could make it to NYNY for the Meet and Greet. Fausto, I thought I heard you say that you Mom lived in Austin. If you come to visit I hope you will have a Meet and Greet there or in San Antonio.

Thanks for the laughs. We can never laugh enough.

Eric R.
San Antonio, TX

P.S. I thought the theme song was fantastic.
