FOF #248 - Gaye, Blues and Tatoos - 02.16.06

If you've never heard of silver-haired blues singing bitch Gaye Adegbalola you probably just started listening to this show. Well known for her anthems like "Big Ovaries," "Bitch with a Bad Attitute" and "Silver Beaver," Gaye has been singing the blues all her life and most recently for the last several decades with her all-woman band Saffire - The Uppity Blues women.
Gaye grew up in segregated Fredericksburg, Virginia in the 1940's and 50's. As the daughter of a jazz musician father and civil rights activist mother, Gaye found two very worthy causes. As a young woman, Gaye participated in the 1960's civil rights struggles that came about of the Rosa Parks/Montgomery Alabama Bus Boycotts. Later in life, she left school teaching behind and went on the road fulltime.
Today, she lives with her partner Suzanne Moe a tatoo artist in their home in Virginia and has a wonderful time as a popular blues singer both as a solo artist and with her band Saffire.
On today's BROADcast, listen to the delightfully gay Gaye as we talk about her songwriting process, how she came up with the song "Big Ovaries," her travels to Africa, why nothing's really changed, and reclaiming the word BITCH.
Oh yes, fellas, this woman is tearing it up on todays show! Yes indeed. When you're done head over to Gaye's site and read her blog.

Greetings from a subject of Her Majesty's United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Northern Ireland.
Just a very quick note to say what an inspirational lady Gaye Adegbalola
was, I think the world would be a much better place if there were more women
like her.
Here in the UK we are lucky to have recently had Civil Partnerships with
equal rights to straight married couples enshrined in law. I hope soon the
powers that be in your country will grant the same rights to you.
Thanks for taking the time to make the show it makes my commute to work fly
by every day.
Much love to everyone concerned particularly Ms Ronnie who never fails to
bring a smile to my lips
