FOF #140 - Military Men - 08.29.05

Jeff Key joined the army to serve his country for what he thought was a noble cause. But, after service in Iraq, he's concluded that this war is corrupt and unjustifiable. Jeff now spends his time fighting to support his army buddies by being a vocal critic and activist against the Bush administration's policies.
Here at the Feast of Fools, we believe that "Supporting the Troops" should mean bringing them home and giving them good health care, not blindly following any President's policies.
On today's show we continue our coverage of the Peace Movement started by Cindy Sheehan at Camp Casey, in Crawford, Texas, located right in front of President Bush's vacation ranch home. Listen to fabulous interviews with an Army Vet named Rick, a young activist named Andrew, and an Iraq Vet named Jeff Key, who recently came out as gay on CNN.
Bonus: A letter from Sean, a serviceman in the Navy written aboard a naval carrier.
Check out these photos taken last weekend at Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas.

Another amazing show guys. Fausto really is the Christiane Amanpour of podcasting! Jeff Key rambles on a bit much though. Lots of excellent stuff here guys. Good job!

I didn't think Jeff was TOO rambly...there are so many thoughts to process in such a short time...I liked his point about the Constitution being a document written by slave owners used to emancipate slaves and being some sort of divine intervention. That IS a bit ironic, really...in the best way.
He's also kinda cute...but that's beside the point.
Your questions were very good, too...like the one about why military service instead of some other volunteer service. I thought his answers really give us a lot of insight into why many people in the military serve. It's a great reminder, as is the letter from Sean, that not all military people are eager to just kill. They want to serve the country, although they have no power over how their civilian (uninformed) leaders choose to use them...
The spiritual goals vs. the monetary ones was also one of the best I've ever heard put into words. It seems to explain Bush's and the neocons' philosophy: "Sorry if we're hurting anyone, but we want what we want NOW." That's how it all starts...they really think they're doing what's necessary, and CANNOT see any other way. Sad for everyone.

Thanks for that comment Aaron. Talking about the military and war is such a complex bag of emtotions and ideas for me, because of the sexual intensity, masuclinity, and power issues it brings up.
