FOF #108 - Wrapped up in Patriotic Frenzy - 07.08.05

Big voiced, big bodied gay men compete at a local Chicago gay bar for the opportunity to sing the national anthem at the next "Out at the Ballgame," the Annual Gay Day at Wrigley Field. Listen to political junkie and media whore Richard Streetman compete in the contest, and talk about what it really means to be patriotic.
PLUS: Words of wisdom from Wanda about the terror bombings in London, and lots of off-key singing on todays show.

Ragan in the City, The Wisdom Girl, and Marge Weinstein. Love it! :)
Congratulations on the win Richard - maybe I'll catch the Pirates/Cubs game on TV. (Well, the national anthem at least.)
Great thoughts on the "war" as well.

Chris Rosser was working that last nerve with all that "WE WILL SURVIVE" Shit! I hate it when queens go all Bush and spew this warmongering rhetoric back out. OY VEY!
Now I did loves me some Etta James coming out of Ms. Winners gorgeous voice. Mmm Hmmm. And you said what I was saying in my head when I heard him going all "christian" Enough with the sheepy religous bs you silly queens. Don't you get it that they hate your pink ass? But we on the other hand love and admire the shit out of you!!!
Cheers,
k

I totally agree with you knotty boy... on the other hand, Roscoes is a gay bar that attracts a lot of young gay men from the midwest, and as a result attracts a lot of guys who've JUST come out of the closet and/or harbor a lot of mixed feelings about their sexuality, and how warmongering money-obsessed political ideology affects them personally.
Republican's aren't the only ones who corner the market on assholism, but they seem to outshine everyone else in that genre these days.
Chris just needs a little more time to think things through. He seems like a sincere kind person, and he was drunk, so don't hold his "God Bless America" against him. I hope he wins next year. But the competition was a lot tougher than it sounds on the podcast.
Richard Streetman winning was the best because he is VERY media saavy and a great singer. He just needs to stay away from the booze the day of the game and he'll be fine. Or drink AFTER you sing your song Richard!
I liked this event because it was so patriotic and nutty. Usually patriotic events are scary and warmongering, and I didnt get the feeling about that at all at this event, considering what had happened overseas earlier in the morning.

Thank you all for your nice comments. As for Aaron C's rift on gays of faith, I agree that a lot of so-called Christians hate GLBT’s. However, their hatred only serves to show their complete misunderstanding of the teaching of Christ. Frankly, anyone who hates as much as these folks is not a follower of Christ.
I think it's time that instead of being run of the Churches, Synagogues and Temples of our birth that Gays get some balls, turn around, run back in and throw out the 21st century’s money changers: right wing fundamentalists be they Christian, Muslim or Zoasterian.

If I'm going to belive in ficticious characters, it's going to be drag queens like Wanda Wisdom and Victoria Lamarr. Besides, they thinks of themselves as messianic figures.
So go throw your abuse on that poor soul, or praise.
Worshipping in these outdated instutitions makes as much sense as giving your money to scientology. Should gays reclaim scientology as well? For example, I don't think the catholic church has ever embraced gayness, as flaming as their costumes and rituals may be.

Just a note about Richard's post:
That wasn't Aaron C's rift on "gays of faith". :) I only offered praise. The secular kind.
Have a great weekend!
