pope, pope... pope pope
this is me upchucking my burrito.
nazi, homophobic, ultra consertative, hope he dies soon bleeeech! did i mention nazi?
You know.... with all the bad press that the catholic church gets... what with 3, yes count them 3 crusades, turning a blind eye to the holocaust, diddling little boys in their stewardship ... hell sometimes even ones that are just passing by, etc, et al, infinitum.... you'd THINK that the college of cardinals would try to pick someone that did not belong to Hitler youth.

Why do you non-Catholics care about this so much more than us Catholics do?
Said by: John M. at April 21, 2005 12:37 PM
Because of the influence the pope has on people and politicians in the world today. Because of the impact he has on how people all around the world think about gays, women, minorities, AIDS, condom use, and so on. Ya know?
If the Ayatollah (sp?) had this much influence, I would be on his case too. (And I usually am)

I understand all that, F... I was commenting on the Hitler Youth angle. My point is that if he hadn't been a Hitler Youth, he'd still likely be just as conservative as he is now. It just doesn't seem that big a deal that he was stupid as a teenager.

Sure, Ratzinger may have been stupid to have been in Hitler Youth, but just because he was "young and stupid" doesn't mean that we can ignore the past. It's a blemish just like anything else and the more you try to cover it up, the more guilty you look.
The best thing the Pope can do is to clear the air about why he joined and how he feels about communism. But with the way the Vatican primarily keeps to itself (Opus Dei?) I wouldn't be surprised if the Pope remained mute on this subject.

Yeah, I feel the same Adbak.

Eh, I'm still not convinced. I don't think an explanation (of the Hitler Youth thing) would magically change Dogma. Besides, he deserted... that's explanation enough.

Young and stupid is setting fire to the den of your best friend's mom's house because you hid the smokes that you and he were smoking when they knocked on the door..... it's not joining the Hitler youth program. That's simply criminal.
Sorry but it's true.

Is this gonna turn into a "last-word" thread? Because I'm very patient....

There are zillions of better candidates than this bozo, period. Those who criticize the vatican (who arent catholics) only care because so many people who are close to us (family and government) are very supersticious and are very influenced by the prejudices of this institution.
You dont see anyone digging up my personal past because I dont influence policy. But if I became governor or REALLY famous (like Cher) all sorts of hilarious/nasty things about me and my past would pop up, and be endlessly scruitinized.
Thats how you know you've reached the big time, when people dig up your dark past and ask you to reconcile/address it.
The pope will just lay dormant about his youth and participation in WWII.
I love last word threads.

Mike: sorry, but it's opinion.
Fausto: la la la I can't hear you.

There will always be people who dogmatically believe the Church, and will, despite their personal consciences and misgivings, continue to torment themselves by trying to stay acceptable to a cold, insouciant organization who couldn't give a crap about them, except when the plate goes around. These people will continue to faithfully follow, and we can't stop them. Like aspiring fashion models--you can't stop the kids from binging and purging. The rest of us will simply get wise.

Hey, dont knock Binging and Purging. It's what made Karen Carpenter a BIG star.

I LOVE that monologue...that was Buddy Cole, right? The gay bartender? I have that on tape somewhere....that and the one where he and Queen Elizabeth are penpals.
Said by: Aaron at April 22, 2005 02:17 PM
Yes, he's one of the godmother of gay comedy monolouges.
But the QEII penpal stuff is another skit. Same character.
