Like the word "hysteria", "lunatic" is also a name that was given to women who were "crazy". The term came from "luna", meaning moon, since the moon's cycle closely relates to a woman's menstrual cycle. In fact, I believe menstrual has it's roots in "moon" too.

Well you know, Madge is a woman of Luna. She even had her own Luna Bar dedication to Ethel Merman.(Sesame Almond Crunch)
